The Unhealthy Side of Hawaiian Punch

Chris Tidwell
Fruit juices are a dime a dozen but their tastes can vary widely. There are giants in the fruit juice industry, and one such fruit drink is Hawaiian Punch. We have all known and loved Hawaiian punch for years but do you know what you're actually drinking? Hawaiian Punch is advertised as a fruit juice, but fruit drink would be a more appropriate terms as there is hardly any real fruit in the drink at all. Aside form that the nutrition facts look a little shaky as compared to other fruit based beverages.

Hawaiian Punch does taste great, and I'll be the first to admit that I love this drink however unhealthy it may be for you. Hawaiian Punch has many unique flavors that taste very good and the flavors are vivid making for an excellent drink. Hawaiian Punch is probably one of the most flavorful fruit drinks on the market regardless of its nutritional value.

Hawaiian punch is often thought of as a fruit juice beverage, but in reality there is not that much fruit juice in Hawaiian Punch. If you look at the bottle, pouch or whatever container you're drinking from you'll notice the label, Natural and Artificially Flavored, but that is truly an understatement coming from this drink. Look closer at the nutrient facts and you'' notice that Hawaiian Punch is actually made with only 5% real fruit juice, so that leaves 95% of unknown liquid. Hawaiian Punch also contains the dreaded High Fructose Corn Syrup, a very unhealthy added sweetener, in fact that's the first ingredient listed on the product.

Aside form Hawaiian Punch containing very little real fruit juice and high fructose corn syrup the nutrition facts on the back don't look too appealing. Per 8 ounces of Hawaiian Punch you'll be getting 105 mg of sodium, 19 grams of sugar, and 21 carbohydrates. All this adds up to a not so healthy drink for your body and especially for children to drink in excess. I will say however that one serving of Hawaiian Punch does have 100% vitamin C which is drinks only nutritional redeeming property.

Hawaiian Punch is a great tasting fruit drink, one of the best on the market, but I just don't see it as a healthy choice for children. Try and choose a more natural alternative when giving you kids, or yourself a fruit flavored drink. However a glass of Hawaiian Punch every now and again won't hurt anybody, just drink in moderation.
