We are a nation of throw aways. We toss out our elderly like we do the daily trash. We don't want to see them. We don't want to hear them. Most assuredly, we don't want to bothered by them.
However, there is one inevitable truth. Some day all of us will BE them. We cannot escape that fate. What we choose to do, or not do, today wil likely seal our fate tomorrow. It is something to think about.
I acquiesce.
I fight no more.
There's no strength left
I've lost the war.
I've been beaten
So I'll give in.
And I'll retreat
To deep within.
Without a roof
Without a home
There is no place
To call my own.
Without some hope;
Without a voice
The real truth is
I have no choice.
I'd say goodbye
But I cannot
For if I leave
What have I got?
Just yesterday
I smiled with joy
Now I am lost.
I'm just a toy.
How did this come?
What was my sin?
When did my life
Begin to end?
I'm at a loss.
My tears flow free.
Is nothing left
That's meant for me?
They took it all.
They stripped me clean.
I've disappeared.
I am not seen.
My crime is one
That must be told
For all I dared
Was to get old.

Post a CommentDoggone it, I cried, too. Good reminder to many who will not hear.
So sad :( Very well written though!
Wow! This was amazing!
Aging is frightening, that's for certain. My grandparents had some lucky breaks and very caring children, so they're doing really well, but I know that's not the story for many elderly people.
Well done.
excellent as always Charlotte
wow -welldone. Beautiful
Excellent work, Charlotte. :-) I am a live in care taker for my elderly mother. She is not able to drive but, she is pretty independent otherwise. I consider it an honor to care for her and she still does so much for me. I try to return the favor, after a lifetime of being a fabulous mother, she deserves no less. I am quite blessed.
Beautifully eloquent, deeply expressive, and wonderfully poetic. Thanks!
Very strong.
