The Uniqueness of a Mother's Day Card

J.Swindell
You may call this woman one or more of the following - Mom, Mother, Madre or, for the more hip and modern - Momz. Just like there are many ways to address the woman who brought you and others into the world, there are many ways to express your gratitude on Mother's Day.

As sending a card is a good start, remember that not all Mother's Day cards are pink (or various shades of red), with pictures flowers on the front and a rhyming (and sometimes sappy) poem inside.

As the traditional mother has changed somewhat in the past 50 years, one core fact remains, this woman's primary job is - and always will be, to love and care for her children; even if she did not give birth to them.

This is why gift and software companies have made the card options as wide as the human imagination will go. Big timers like Hallmark (who also distribute the very popular Shoebox Greeting line) and American Greetings have free e-cards for those willing to open an online account. Desktop publishing software such PrintMaster by Broderbund (my personal favorite) and Microsoft's MS Publisher make personalizing cards as easy as a single mouse click. For those who have an artsy or creative side, Michael's has an extensive selection of card making supplies or card kits are available at your local discount or stationery store.

As far as what to put inside goes, it's best to keep in mind what the recipient likes best. If she thinks a computer mouse has ears, then don't send an e-card because it is convenient for you. Some women still love syrupy poems and other like sentiments. Yet, if she's the sassy and/or earthy type, then most any card featuring Shoebox character, Maxine would be a good match.

If the past year has been full of challenges for this person, then just a few words about how much you love her and will always be by her side, especially in times of need will mean more than how glittery or expensive the card is. Sometimes a bit of humor can temporarily lift spirits or a card containing a Biblical verse or other inspirational saying may be a good choice.

Regardless of what you say or which woman you say it to, just let that special woman in your life know that you care!
