The Unit Episode Recap: Always Kiss Them Goodbye

Lori Crawford
Having ended the crisis that nearly shut down the Unit, things get back to normal very quickly. Colonel Ryan asks when the computer room will be up and running again. The officer in charge assures him that it'll be up sooner than he expects. One of the techs corrects her that it's a two week job at least. She responds that the room better be up and running by dusk tomorrow.

Jonas and Molly share a romantic moment when she discovers plans for a date he's arranged for them. The moment is just that when his phone rings ending it before it begins. Molly goes next door and helps Kim pack things in her vehicle. Bob runs out to his car teasing Kim about being pregnant again.

Mack wakes up on the couch at Charles and Hector's apartment. He heads home to get his things so he can move into his own place. While he's packing, his daughter, Jenny, begs him not to go. He tries to reassure her, but the moment ends when Tiffy joins them in the garage. Mack reaches up to get something from a top shelf and pulls the whole thing crashing down on him. Jenny is terrified and he's trapped. Tiffy helps him get out from under the shelves. The back of Mack's shirt is torn revealing the scars from his recent torture. Jenny continues to scream bloody murder attracting the attention of a couple neighbors out for a walk. One neighbor calls the police to report a domestic disturbance that appears extremely violent.

The team, minus Mack, assembles to get their orders. A canister of VX nerve gas is missing and their job is to find it. They track it to a hanger, but immediately come under heavy gunfire. The people who took the gas mounted it under the wing of a small airplane and takes off during the gun battle. Bob runs to another plane and gives chase. Charles tries to go with him, but he can't get to the plane before Bob has to take off.

Colonel Ryan is furious that the MPs were called to Mack and Tiffy's house. He doesn't give them a chance to explain. Instead, he assigns Mack to quarters in the Bachelor apartments and forbids him from seeing his kids without another member of the Unit present. Tiffy tries to use her personal relationship with the Colonel to get him to change his mind, but he quickly dismisses her.

Mack is assigned to run command on the nerve gas theft. Jonas calls in the situation to Mack then goes to get the jump on the guys shooting at them. Jonas is disappointed that they killed both men because he wanted to interrogate them first. In the air, Bob searches for the plane, but he's too far behind to see it. They fear that the pilot changed course.

At home, Tiffy tells her daughters that Mack isn't coming home anymore. Jenny takes it especially hard while Lissy tells her divorce is something everybody does and storms off. Kim tries to convince her boss at the radio station to let her host a call in show. He's not sold on the idea until she mentions that she's already sold advertising for the show. He promises to think it over then discuss it with her again later.

Still not knowing who the people are, Jonas decides to suit up and investigate the inside of the hanger himself. Bob's continued search pays off. He spots the plane. Now they have to figure out how to bring it down without releasing the gas. He moves in closer to try to get the pilot to land. Back in the command center, Mack figures out that the plane is headed right towards the base. Bob finally gets close enough and prepares to shoot at the pilot, but discovers that the man is already dead. Apparently he was a victim of the nerve gas.

Mack and the Colonel discuss ways to get the plane down. They can't shoot it down because it'll give maximum disbursement to the nerve gas. Jonas looks around inside the hanger. He sees that it's rigged to explode. He disarms the bomb to continue his investigation. The Colonel contacts his higher ups for permission to evacuate the base.

Molly brings Kim's kids to her at the radio station. While there, Kim receives a phone call from Base Ops ordering her to issue an evacuation alert due to severe weather. She thinks it's a crank call because there's nothing on the National Weather Service. Molly calls Colonel Ryan for confirmation. He talks to Kim and orders her to issue the alert immediately.

Jonas confirms with the doctor on site that the man inside the hanger died from exposure to the nerve gas. He takes a picture of him and tells his team to compare his face to a known terrorist. Back at Command, Mack growls at the tech because the photos haven't been received. The tech works to get the interface up. Kim fields phone calls at the radio station when people call to question the alert she issued. She asks Molly to get her kids to safety while she stays at the station to keep the alert going.

In the air, Bob and the plane with the nerve gas are jostled when Air Force jets circle them. He tells Command to get them out of there because they can't go slow enough to do any good and their missiles will spread the nerve gas over more area. Once they're gone, Mack tells Bob there's not much more they can do except hunker down and wait. Bob disagrees. There's always something they can do. Once the plane gets over the city, the casualties will be much higher. Bob goes into a steep climb then descent on top of the other plane.

Mack figures out what he's about to do and tries to talk him down. Bob is resolute. He asks Mack to kiss his kids just as he's about to hit the plane. But he misses. The plane suddenly took a new heading. Bob reports in to Command the new direction. They figure it's been on autopilot. The new heading takes it away from the base, but into other cities. Bob decides to try a maneuver the British fighter pilots used on the Germans.

Jonas sees a body covering something inside an inner room of the hanger. He crawls in and hooks the body. When he's a safe distance away, he turns the body over. He looks in and sees the body was protecting a laptop, not a hiding a bomb. He reports his findings outside and that he's cleared for booby traps. When he walks through the door, a gel form of the nerve gas shoots out at him contaminating his Haz Mat suit.

In the air, Bob gets close enough to tip the plane out of the sky. Before it hits the ground, the autopilot brings it back on course. He tries again with the same result. Back at Command they relay the identities of the group to the field. Charles gives Jonas a command string to access the laptop which they think is controlling the plane. Turns out, the laptop isn't in control, but it does have the plane's ultimate destination. The terrorists turned it into a self guided missile heading for St. Louis to detonate at Cardinal Stadium during a standing room only game during rush hour.

The tech is nearly catatonic at the news that St. Louis is about to be bombed. Mack threatens him out of it. Bob calls in to check their remaining time. Mack gives them 20 minutes until the plane reaches the suburbs. Bob confirms with Command that the autopilot won't be able to recover from a stall.

He asks to talk to Kim before he does anything, but the tech doesn't have any more phone lines set up. Mack offers to pass along the message. Bob tells him that he'll know what to say. Bob flies underneath the plane and shoves it up. They both go into spins and head for the ground. The nerve gas plane crashes into an unpopulated area. Bob struggles to recover his own plane. At the last moment, Bob is able to right his aircraft and return to safety. Everyone in Command cheers Bob's success.

At the radio station, Kim announces the cancellation of the storm alert and the name of the winner in the Order Rescinded pool. The manager is so pleased with how she handled all the callers that a live call in show would be a piece of cake for her. He gives her the go ahead. Mack picks up his belongings from the house. Molly and Jonas pick up where they left off. Bob goes home and watches the Cardinal game with his family.
