The 'United States of Shame' - What is Your State Infamous For?

Maranda Russell
According to the 'United States of Shame' poll, that TIME put together and released this week, Ohio's worst trait is that we are the nerdiest state around. Not bad considering some of the titles that the other states received. One of the reasons that Ohio won the title of nerdiest is because our state has the highest rate of library use when compared to the rest of the country.

As an Ohian, I am proud to know that my state is known for it's nerdiness. Now I feel like I fit into Ohio even better since I am a raging nerd myself (just ask my foster children!). In fact, my foster children often complain that I am turning them into nerds just by living with them.

Below I have attached a list of the poll's results for a few other states that I found interesting. Maybe you should keep these things in mind the next time your family decides to move!

After you find your own state's claim to fame, feel free to leave a comment below about whether you believe your state really has these issues or not.

Maine - dumbest state.

New York - longest commute time.

Wisconsin - most binge drinkers.

Alaska - highest suicide rate.

Washington - highest rate of bestiality. (WHAT?)

Texas - lowest rate of high school graduation.

Florida - highest rate of identity theft.

North Dakota - Ugliest residents.

South Dakota - highest amount of rape.

Utah - highest rate of porn usage.

New Mexico - most anti-social.

Kentucky - most cancer deaths.

Pennsylvania - most cases of arson.

Tennessee - most corrupt.

South Carolina - most mobile homes.

Colorado - most cocaine use.

Oregon - most homeless.

California - air pollution.

I only listed a portion of the results, but if you would like to see the entire listing, visit http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/01/26/why-your-state-sucks-the-great-american-map-of-fail/.

As someone who is originally from Ohio, I too am rather surprised over the results. I figured Ohio would have been notable for worst roads or something like that. Nerdiest is a pretty good label by comparison! Thanks for the recap!
