I find that comforting, because using God to explain what we dont understand seems capricious and promotes ignorance and encourages apathy. The late Pope even asked Hawkings no to explore the moment of creation because that belong to God. Sounds kinda familiar doesn't it?
I believe that someone named Galileo's who supported the heliocentric theory (the earth revolves around the sun), which got him into trouble with the Roman Catholic Church. Who in 1633 the Inquisition convicted him of heresy and forced him to recant (publicly withdraw) his support of Copernicus. They sentenced him to life imprisonment, but because of his advanced age allowed him serve his term under house arrest at his villa in Arcetri outside of Florence.
Needless to say religious leaders of all faiths are somewhat upset by Hawkings claims.
Reverend Canon Rod Garner of Holy Trinity Church in Southport told the Visiter: "Professor Stephen Hawking now thinks that the Big Bang was the result of the inevitable laws of physics and did not need God to create the universe. He has changed his mind.//
"Twenty years ago in A Brief History of Time, he was open to the idea of a divine hand in the creation of the world and wrote about the possibility of knowing the mind of God. Not any more.
The head of the Church of England, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams, told the Times that "physics on its own will not settle the question of why there is something rather than nothing."
He added: "Belief in God is not about plugging a gap in explaining how one thing relates to another within the Universe. It is the belief that there is an intelligent, living agent on whose activity everything ultimately depends for its existence."
Ibrahim Mogra, an imam and committee chairman at the Muslim Council of Britain, was also quoted by the Times as saying: "If we look at the Universe and all that has been created, it indicates that somebody has been here to bring it into existence. That somebody is the almighty conqueror."
An interesting choice of words to say the least.
I find it interesting at these reactions, so many believe that some ceature or being called God must be responsible for our existence and provides meaning, value and establishes how we should live. Its just not possible that we began as a little pile of goo and have since evolved and managed to create a fantasy to explain why we are here.
Its just to overwhelming to think that we are responsible for our own code of conduct and morals and are not judged by some imaginary creature in some fictious afterlife but instead we are accountable in the here and now.
Isn't that special.
