The Upper Crust: A Wonderful Local Sandwich Shop

Heather Stottman
The Upper Crust is a wonderful little sandwich shop in downtown Riverside, California. It is in the beautiful downtown Mission Inn area that boasts several places to eat and shop as well as the historic Mission Inn itself. Of all the places to eat in this area, the Upper Crust is my favorite and is incidentally the restaurant that my husband and I ate at on our first valentine's day. A couple (husband and wife) run the sandwich shop. They chat with all who enter their establishment making all feel welcome. Their food is excellent. Their menu consists of sandwiches, soups, and salads. They also have some bakery treats such as cake, brownies or cookies (bake fresh on site). All their food is reasonable priced and you can tell they use top-notch ingredients in their food.

Their sandwiches range in price from $7 to $9 dollars. You can build your own (choosing from several types of cheese, meat and bread) or choose from one of their excellent specialty sandwiches including the Hawaiian (turkey, ham, swiss cheese, pineapple on a French role), an excellent BLT, or French Dip. They have excellent soups that change daily which you can order as a side to your sandwich (or you can choose other sides such as Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Pasta Salad, Carrot Sticks, Cole Slaw, or Fresh Fruit). Or have the soup in a bowl with crackers and bread for about $4. They also boast a variety of salads including Dinner, Chef, Tuna, Chicken, Caesar or Cobb and that range in price from $5.50 to $7.50. My husband and I come here frequently and we usually eat for around $20 including our drinks. He usually orders a Hawaiian with potato salad (both of which he says is delicious) and I usually have a BLT with Avocado on Sourdough Bread. I often get Chili (which the have almost daily) as the side to my sandwich and we purchase 2 large sodas at $1.60. Their BLT is the best I have eaten; the bacon that is neither too crisp nor soggy, the lettuce is really crispy and fresh and the tomatoes are yummy and not squishy.

They have limited indoor seating, but plentiful outdoor seating and on a pleasant day it is a wonderful experience indeed. If you are in this area, then I recommend you stop by and have a sandwich, you won't regret it. It is a wonderful place to stop and have lunch while you are shopping in the Mission Inn downtown Riverside area. They are open 10-5 Monday through Friday and 11-4 Saturday and Sunday.
