The U.S. Wants Us to Paint Roofs White?

Debi Rideout
Yes, that is what the Obama administration wants us to do says US Energy Secretary, Steven Chu. Apparently it is believed that if all of the US paints their roofs white that it would help improve our climate, and help with global warming. By painting different things like our roofs, buildings, and buying cars in lighter colors it is believed that it will help us use energy less. Plus, by painting everything lighter colors it is believed that it will help sun rays bounce back away from our planet.

So, what do you think about this? I have to admit my first thought was that this idea was a bit nuts. The whole US are going to start painting their roofs white? It's hard to fathom that actually happening. I did not see myself climbing up on my house roof anytime soon to make sure it gets painted white. Plus, can you imagine how dirty it is going to look after awhile? I cannot imagine that white paint is going to hold up that well on top of our roofs. I mean I could be wrong, but I do not think so.

However, after I had a minute or so to think about it I changed my opinion. Is it really that bad to make a few minor changes to help our environment? I mean I have children right now, and I want them and the children that follow them to live in the best world possible. That means that they need to live in a decent world climate. In order to do that we definitely should be thinking about the future of our planet.

I know that there is a lot of speculation about whether global warming exists. Personally, I believe it does. However, even if it did not it would not hurt to do things that could just very well help our planet. Buying a car in a lighter color makes sense to me. I live in a warm climate already. A lighter colored car takes in less heat, and a lighter colored house will make me not use my AC to much. I kind of like to save money on my AC bill. Don't you?

So, if you had the same first reaction that I did that this is a bit nuts to be painting our roofs white, try giving it another thought. It really does not hurt any of us to try doing things in a new way. I never recycled when I was a kid, but now I do it every week. Nothing ever stays the same, and change is a part of life. At least the government is asking us to make a good change, and I am now okay with that. Let our climate be a good one and always remain that way.

I think the roof would look nice at first but after a few months it would be an eyesore and get dirty anyways so why bother.

I would not paint my roof white. It would look awful. I dont think it will change much with our climate anyways. Great article, though!

As a former roofer, I can tell you white roofs are the most beautiful roofs when they're first laid down, but in a year, they're ugly, mildew-streaked eyesores that will never come clean. The roofs of the school buses around here have been painted white for years, for the same reasoning behind the Obama initiative. Besides, we cannot stop climate change even if we all went back to living in caves, so doing it for such reasons is tragically futile. However, doing it to conserve energy and lower your utility bills, now that's just plain good sense, there!

Hmmm, I am conflicted about this. Aren't there more effective means than to paint roofs white? It would cost an arm and a leg to do this.

Hey let's all wear white clothes, paint our roofs white and become little Obama robots. This is insane. Where has our individuality gone? Per evolution, climate changes were occurring long before we began using gasoline and creating electricity. Per religion, humans will not outlast the earth. So should we really waste our efforts painting our roofs white? This is insane.

Yes, they do make white shingles by the way. And it's the insulation in your attic that keeps the a/c from running too long. heat also comes in thru the windows too.

  • Greenhill5/28/2009

Interesting - but I don't know if there is actual roof paint!! I just had a new energy efficient heat pump, and a/c unit put in to replace a not so functional system, we had the insulation doubled in our attic and put in new exterior french doors - I'm doing my part to save and I draw the line at painting the roof white.

The point with the white roofs is that you save on AC cooling costs, which take energy to run. Less coal being burnt to generate your electricity. This is the underlying strategy to reduce carbon emissions and prevent global warming, not to reflect heat back into space!

Excellent write on this. When I first read it I felt the same as you did. it sounded like a nutty idea!. But as I read on, I tend to agree. What harm can it do, to try to save the planet and if a little bit, or rather a lot of paint does it, then lets give it a try. We can always repaint it black if we want to. But my guess is that the paint company could have used a boost and they might behind this entire idea, that has nothing to do with cooling off anything. my opinion is lets leave our homes and roofs the way they are until there is actual proof that this is not just filling the pockets of roofers, painters, and those that sell that stuff.

I agree with Julia, very interesting! LOL Julia on the smiley face. That would make things fun. I don't know what to think, but will be watching now to see if anything happens.
