The Uses and Folklore of Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of quartz with a translucent purple color and is the most valuable of the quartz family. The highest grade of amethyst is called a Deep Russian stone and is a blue purplish color. Some amethyst stones on the market today are heat treated to produce the same color. The darker the color the more valuable the stone. A normal amethyst will cost between $2 to $5 in any occult or rock shop. In ancient times amethyst was worn to keep one from becoming addicted to alcohol. If someone were to drink wine out of an amethyst glass they would no longer crave wine excessively. The ancient Egyptians used this stone in their jewelry and for religious purposes. Roman soldiers wore amethyst for protection in battle.

This stone has many uses in the magical world. Amethyst is used to induce harmony, induce sleep and prophetic dreams, increase psychic awareness, provide protection, open the third eye, calm fears, reduce stress, relieve depression, induce oneness and raise psychic awareness. The color of the stone is the same color as the crown chakra which is also called the third eye located in the middle of the forehead. In meditation focusing on this chakra will open the mind to spiritual messages and increase one's spiritual awareness. Holding amethyst to your forehead during meditation will combine the stones natural energy to that of your crown chakra. The amethyst is thought to have the same "frequency" as the third eye.

Amethyst is also a stone used in healing magick. It is said to be a good "transmitter" of positive and healing energies. To use it, just send loving, healing thoughts to someone that is ill. Hold the stone in your hand and focus sending your energy to them. The stone will store your energy and then send it out to the correct person. Another way to use this stone in healing magick is lay out a photograph of the ill person. Place amethyst on the picture preferably covering the spot or location of their illness. For instance if someone broke their arm place the stone on the arm of the person in the photograph.

When using divination, keep amethyst out on the table or close by to strengthen your psychic abilities. Wearing amethyst as jewelry can raise your spiritual vibrations.
