The Valley Triathlon 2007

John Kaleta Discuss the Event with Tim Devaney

Tim Devaney
The following interview, between John Kaleta and Tim Devaney, was conducted on Monday, August 6, 2007, via email. Some grammar may have been edited for readability purposes, however, the content was not altered. The topic of the interview is the Valley Triathlon, held in northern Maine.

Q: Will you describe the Valley Triathlon?
A: [It is] a friendly event between two men in their mid-40s, and three teenagers. We swam (men) across the lake from Brown's Point to Sly Brook side (3/4 of a mile). The teens kayaked both ways and spotted the swimmers. [We] Mountain Biked 12 miles on Maine Public reserve land, steep and fun trails, ran five miles to the end of Sly Brook road and back! We wait for every body at the end of each stage.

Q: How did it go on Sunday?
A: A blustery and cool day made the swim a bit choppy; the water was warm and made it enjoyable. About half way across the wind began to ease! The bike and run went well as the cool temperatures and low humidity gave perfect conditions!

Q: Explain why you enjoy it?
A: This event gives all participants a 3-4 hr cardiovascular workout without taxing the muscles of one group too much! It's also a challenge to move from one event to another, and it's a nice way to spend part of a beautiful day!

Q: Who were the competitors, and how many were there?
A: Paul Lamereau, [who is] from PI

Q: Who won?
A: We were all winners. I edged Paul on the swim, we all finished the bike togetrher, Ian stomped me on the run, Vicky beat Kaitlyn on the ski (but she was skating and Kaitlyn was using classic style.

Q: Who's idea was it to start the event in the Valley?
A: Mark Kelly (madawaska teacher) and myself started the event in 1990. At that time we swam the lake, biked to Fort Kent, ran the mills, and biked back to Sly Brook.

Q: It took place in Eagle Lake, correct?
A:
Yes Mostly on the Sly Brook Side

Q: I realize you are a teacher, could you tell the audience a little bit more about yourself?
A: [I have] been teaching 20 years (19 at FKCHS)....[I] have coached different sports at [Fort Kent Community High School] for 20 years, most recently cross country running and Nordic skiing. [I] love all outdoor sports and activities, especially dogsledding. [I] have had a hand in the establishment of the Can Am Races and Eagle Lake 100, and didn't want this to be a full blown event that is too competitive - just fun!

Q: Did anything unexpected or out-of-the-ordinary happen on Sunday?
A:
Kaitlyn and Vicky were the first ever to roller ski on the third leg, that's what makes this event unique - anything goes! I aleady mentioned that the swim was a challenge due to the chop.

Q: What is the point of this specific Triathlon?
A: Fun and a good long cardio workout

Q: Is there anything else that would be interesting to know?
A: We would like to carry this event out until the 20th anniversary. Then we plan to retire the event!
