The Valuable Experience of Being a Dental Assistant

Derek Jones
Dental assistant training can be completed within 12-24 months and will provide you the skills you need for working in a dental facility. Training as a Dental Assistant is the best thing to do if you want to become a Dental Hygienist or Dentist, as it provides you with opportunities to check out the dental field and know what it is you're thinking of getting in to. It's the wisest thing to do, as it helps you make the right decision, and prevents you from spending four years or more in education for something you might not even enjoy doing.

The Dental Assistant helps out with many things that are needed in dental practices. They are to sterilize the tools and get all the items ready for the procedures the dentists and hygienists need to undertake. They also assist during the various procedures, hand the tools and equipment over and, in some states, can even administer local anesthetics.

Being a Dental Assistant places one in the front row for all procedures that need to take place. These procedures - and the techniques used to do them - are learned during the entire experience. While a Dental Assistant won't ever be allowed to perform these procedures (obviously because of licensing issues) they will be in the unique position of being able to learn all the details simply by watching.

If a Dental Assistant decides that they will enjoy this field and will continue their education in it, the knowledge gained during the time of being a Dental Assistant is incredibly valuable. Since procedures have been learned from being involved with dentists and hygienists directly, the odds of the Dental Assistant in doing these procedures with accuracy during their studies is considerably higher compared to others.

Most Dentists prefer to keep the staff that they have, especially if they find them reliable. They would probably, therefore, be most willing to schedule around classes and studies. Some may even offer to assist in the cost of studies to reimburse in some way for the education received.

Being a Dental Assistant before being a Hygienist or Dentist places you significantly further in the field than the competition. It gives you work experience and education, rather than just education. This is something most employers would be looking for. Your skills in communication with patients are also considerably better, which gives you an edge (especially if you're planning to go private one day.)

The certificate for being a Dental Assistant might, for some, just be a stepping stone for higher ambitions. But the experience gained opens up significantly more opportunities. Being a Dental Assistant would also help how you would treat other Dental Assistants, giving them the advice and assistance they need.

People are concerned about the health of their teeth these days, more than ever. This has led to a significant growth in all dentistry fields. Technology has led to less painful procedures, which has encouraged patients to be more serious about dental care.

If you are interested in pursuing the excellent career of a Hygienist or Dentist, and are a Dental Assistant, you should check up on local programs in your area. Many of these will credit you because of your current work within dentistry. This may depend on what your current tasks are, or on the program. However, many find that they don't need to take as many courses as others, which save them time and money before enrolling into a specific dental program.
