The Value of a Change Jar

Daniel Rein
A change jar is a typical and simple invention which requires a large jar. Any time you have any lose change on you, you put it into this jar and watch the coins accumulate. Some people put their quarters into the jar and other people leave quarters out because they are useful for parking meters or other items. A change jar is a helpful invention because it helps you save money in a very simple way. Whenever you buy an item, you usually receive change and most people do not have any use for the spare change.

The most common use that these change jars have is for collecting money for a beer or alcohol fund. Other people use a change or tip jar in order to collect money to buy gifts.

The change jar is a simple invention that is best applicable if living with a bunch of people. For example, if my college dorm room, we have a giant change jars that sits on the table in the living room of the dorm room. Whenever we buy something or find loose change on the floor, we put the money in the jar. Periodically we check and count the money. I recommend that you count the change on the monthly basis. If you find that you have a large amount of a particular coin denomination such as dimes, nickels or quarters, then you should get the coin holders than the bank carries and wrap the coins in them. The coin carriers for example hill hold ten dollars worth of quarters. When you have a full roll of coins, you can trade in this coin roll to the bank which will give you cash.

To make the best use of your time I recommend that you cash in your change only when you have a significant amount of money saved up. For example, if your goal is buying the new Harry Potter Book that just came out and you have the thirty dollars you need and have saved that amount in change, wrap your coins in the coin holders and then cash it in the bank. Then you can go to the store and purchase the item. Most stores will not be happy if you give them thirty dollars worth of change.

Another practical use for a change jar is to use the coins for buying small items that cost under a dollar such as a newspaper or gum. You can pay for these items with change instead of breaking a dollar ill to pay for the item. This will save you the hassle of having loose change in your pockets.
