The Value of Homeschool Communities and Forums

A. Hermitt
Homeschooling can be a lonely endeavor at times. It is rare to have another homeschooler on your street or even in your neighborhood. It can even be hard to find other homeschoolers in your town, and if you do, the children may be different ages and have different interests. This is not to say that you can't find homeschooling support. Personally, I drive 40 minutes every week to make sure my kids connect and collaborate with other homeschoolers.

As a homeschooling parent, I have found camaraderie and fellowship with other homeschoolers online. I blog about my homeschool experiences and read about the experiences of others, which has been very valuable to me. Sometimes, you just want to ask a question and get a quick response, or you want to offer assistance to someone in need. This is best accomplished through online homeschool communities and forums.

Through the use of online homeschool forums and communities, I have been able to connect with homeschoolers all over the country. I have found validation for my thoughts and motivation from other homeschoolers as well as information and support when I needed it.

Some homeschool forums that I have found very helpful over the years include: Homeschool Spot, the Homeschool Lounge, and the Time4Learning Parent Forums. Even though my kids aged out of the Time4Learning homeschool program a few years ago, the parent forum remains my favorite place to discuss homeschooling in general as well as topics of religion and nutrition. By participating in this forum over the years, I have been able to help and encourage new homeschoolers as well as brainstorm ideas for a homeschool supplement. We have also discussed directions to take after a child has completed the Time4Learning program.

So you can see that while person-to-person homeschool groups and meetings are great, homeschool forums are invaluable when you have a question or issue that you feel is urgent and want to discuss immediately. They are also a great place to visit to discuss homeschooling with other like-minded families and to give back to the next generation of homeschoolers.
