The Value of Online Publishing on Sites Such as Associated Content, Helium and Triond
And Self Publishing
In the hope to augment their viewings and thus their money, there are many articles written by content producers on just this subject.
And the ones that I have read are poor, or just mundane. One promised a guide earning a high amount of dollars, and yet its title was a misnomer.
It may be a way of gaining clout as a writer and some money, but it seems such an obvious way to raise one's profile. It is actually more irritating than cunning marketing, because one learns so little. Those already on the site take the advantage of speaking to new writers, although they often then reveal themselves to be very new content producers and thus have little to offer. Another gave a tip which was very annoying to those following her link and then finding that the information she offered was irrelevant to their question. And her method is also is an aberration of the other site's policy.
Perhaps what this really am touching on is the worth of writing which is published online - or indeed self publishing. It is frustrating when quality work is passed over by editors, and not being yet published its not a sign of poor quality. For many writers, a large rejection pile is a sign of just the reverse, as so many great artists have endured this and thus it can be a sign of hope that one's work is truly original - or as some of prone to the melancholy and self aggrandizement - that we are misunderstood and out of out rime.
Yet the stringent and competitive nature of having to pass an editorial board does show that if you are published, that your work is worth something. People can be impressed by seeing something in print, but without a sifting process, this does not necessarily signify true talent or that you have attained any accolade, or in truth, even your goal. If one just wishes to gain an audience and some money as a hobby, then all content producers on these sites have succeeded. But as an indicator of real talent and popularity, it is - I shall politely say that it can be misleading.
However, I am aware of the irony of having written this and in my own hopes of being a serious writer who is glad of a starting point to showcase my work.
