The Value of a Penny

Shirley A Mandel
There was a time when I made good money , and my expenses were low, so I had little respect for dollars, much less mere pennies. My father once went into my room and gathered a fist full of loose quarters just lying helter-skelter on my dresser and cashed them in for five gallons of gas, and I didn't even notice the missing money nor did I care very much. I was not very wise.

But now, after becoming disabled, and having my income cut in half, and we all know how expenses for simple necessities are rising, I have learned my lesson about the importance of having enough money just to live.

Even the little pennies in our currency are important now. I have learned to recycle plastic products for another practicle use, shaving pennies off my expenses; I get more books from the library and buy used books, saving more pennies.I even gather them up from the car or pick them up on the floor or sidewalk to put in a jar for a rainy month, to buy a drink or fast food meal on the 31st. of the month, when I get my retirement check on the first. I have really learned to cut the waste in my life, and the value of a penny
.
God doesn't waste anything either, especially when it comes to people, He can use even the smallest person in the eyes of the world to do the things that are truly great. He can use the prayers of an elderly woman in a nursing home to bring a grown man to his knees in repentance before God; He can use a poet of low estate, like myself , to encourage a hurting person, He can even use the song of a third grade student to bring an angry person to tears-"Jesus loves me this I know." And lets never forget that He used a peasant girl to give birth to the Savior of the world, in an animal's feeding trough.

He can use you too regardless of what denomination of human society you find yourself in, high or low. Just have the faith of a little child and pray like a senior citizen!

When you think about it, pennies also say, "In God We Trust." Hmm.

Shirley, isn't it amazing that plenty is not enough without Him, and not enough can be plenty when He walks with you? When we buy into the world's standards, and forget that He alone is Provider, there is never enough. As He is my sole source for everything, for me to say there is not enough is to say HE is not enough. I remind myself of this daily. YOU are a living epistle, an inspiration, and a gift!

This is all so true Shirley....we don't realize how important pennies are until we don't have them, but the Lord always knew how such "little" things are extremely important!
