The Value of Television Censorship

Melissa D. Thomas
With the increase of youth violence, in today's society, television censorship is more valuable than ever before. While more and more mothers are heading to work, children are left with the television to keep them occupied. They are picking up words and actions that they would not normally be exposed to.

Even though we say that it is bad to have the televison raising our children, we do it anyway. On one hand, you can blame the parents and on the other you can put the blame on the television networks. In reality, everyone is to blame and no one is taking the blame. We should have more censorship on televison and parents should also keep their children from constantly watching television. Unfortunately, there is no realistic solution, because the parents have to work and the network executives must make money. Television seems to be the perfect solution for everyone except the children. We are allowing our children to watch many things that we would not sit down and actually watch ourselves.

In conclusion, television censorship is valuable to reserve the innocence of our children. Violence among today's youth is growing at an alarming rate and most of the problems are blamed on television. While parents are under the strain of working overtime and double shifts to provide for their family in today's over priced economy, children and subjected to the violent uneducated world that television brings into our homes each day.Violence is not the only reason for television censorship. There are many cartoons that should be censored because the actions of the characters do not exhibit common sense. This may not seem like a problem, but imagine a young two year old who watches Sponge Bob and begins to imitate their actions. The muttering words of Patrick and the naive way that Sponge Bob runs in circles screaming. A young child learns from and imitates everything he or she sees. Instead of learning valuable things that will help to grow their brain function, they are actually decreasing their brains capabilities. First, and foremost, it is not the mother's fault that they must work. In today's society, a mother's role is much different than it once was. A two person income is now needed to survive and there is an increase in the number of single mothers. In the end, our children are the ones that suffer. There are many children who are committing adult crimes and are charged as such. Many have confessed that the ideas have come from television. They've seen an actor perform a stunt or crime and they decided to try it themselves. In movies they often do not show the true consequences of violent actions. For example; when someone is shot, they are either invincible or awake as zombies. It's simply unrealistic.

This article is definitely without structure or research. Public schools are where kids learn to curse, steal, lie, cheat, and harm. And TELEVISIONS are not meant to raise children. Any parent that thinks it is okay is WRONG. The blame IS on the PARENT. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE CARE OF IT, DON'T HAVE ONE.

Television censorship is needed less now then it ever was. This article is totally off base. Hiding your kids from potty words is a foolish practice. By the age of 14 they will be a part of their regular vocabulary.
