The Vampire Diaries: A Look at the CW's New Show

Teresa Conner
Hot on the tails of Twilight's phenomenal success, the CW has a new teen vampire sensation coming to television this fall. The Vampire Diaries is a one-hour show based on the young adult quadrilogy of the same name, written by L.J. Smith in the early 1990s.

The story follows the high school girl, Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev from The N's Degrassi: The Next Generation) who becomes entangled in a love triangle with two vampire brothers Stefan Salvatore (played by Paul Wesley from ABC Family's Fallen mini-series and Lifetime's Army Wives) and Damon Salvatore (played by Ian Somerhalder from ABC's Lost and countless films); one evil and one good. Stefan is trying to live peacefully among mortals, while his brother Damon is the corporeal incarnation of vampiric cruelty. Both will be battling for Elena's soul, and the souls of the entire town of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

Other actors include Steven R. McQueen (of Everwood) as Jeremy Gilbert, Katerina Graham (of 17 Again) as Bonnie Bennett, Sara Canning (of Smallville) as Jenna Moyer, Zach Roerig (of One Life To Live) as Matt Donovan, and Candice Accola (of Supernatural) as Caroline Truitt.

The Vampire Diaries comes from Alloy Entertainment, the company behind another book series turned television show, Gossip Girl. Kevin Williamson (of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dawson's Creek) and Julie Plec (of Kyle XY) are set to be executive producers and writers, with Alloy Entertainment's Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy also being executive producers.

According to InBaseLine.com (1), The Vampire Diaries is filming in and around Atlanta, Georgia and based on The Hollywood Reporter (2) will have thirteen episodes in its first season.

The Vampire Diaries will be replacing Smallville (which has moved to Fridays) on their Thursday night line-up, followed by the returning series Supernatural to complete Thursdays as a night for the paranormal on The CW. The series premiere will air on October 13, 2009 at 8 p.m. EST (3). The Hollywood Reporter claims, the show will air on Canada's CTV, Thursdays at 7p.m. (4)
