The Vampire Diaries: Unrequited Love -- Damon Confesses His Love for Elena

(Recap of the Episode: "Rose" (First Aired 11/4/2010)

Rolando Cruz
Amid the brotherly road trip, the witchcraft, the new teen wolf, and the fight with an old world vampire, there was one underlying theme to this week's episode of "Vampire Diaries," and that was, Damon (Ian Somerhalder ) loves Elena (Nina Dobrev). Sure we all suspected as much, after all there was last year's season ending kiss (okay, so he mistook Katherine for Elena, it counts), as well as a heartfelt confession over killing Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). Still, it was nice to finally get around to seeing Damon confess his love for Elena. Of course, this seemed as nothing more than a teaser since it's still early and anything that happens with these two will surely finish out the season. So, shortly after he confessed his love for her, Damon compels her and Elena forgets the whole thing...or did she?

This Week's Major Plot Lines:
Love confession aside, this episode centered around Elena's abduction by two old world vampires looking for redemption from a group of powerful vampires known as The Originals. Dangling Elena as trade bait, the two vamps (Trevor and Rose) are looking to buy their way out of a death sentence. Apparently the whole traces back to Katerina Petrova (like that was a surprise), but since they can't get their hands on the real thing then her doppelganger (aka Elena) is the next best thing.

The scheme would have succeeded if not for the Salvatore brothers' timely rescue. Of course, where to search for Elena is made possible by a scribing spell from Mystic Falls' resident witch, Bonnie (Katerina Graham).

In the end, Elena is rescued, the Salvatore brothers make a new allied, and a member of The Originals walks away from an "almost fatal" encounter with a sharp coat rack.

This Week's Minor Plot Lines:
Suspecting she knows he is a werewolf, Tyler (Michael Trevino) confronts Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola). Caroline tries her best to keep her secret from him, but once push comes to vampire shove, she gives in and tells. Do we have a budding friendship in the making? Perhaps. Until then, it was good to see Caroline kick butt, since few characters come with the mix of strength and vulnerability that the needy vampire possess.

Is it Me, or...
Is it me or are Bonnie and Jeremy coming awfully close to getting it on? Bonnie has already pointed out that Jeremy seems "all grown up," as if she is suddenly seeing him through a new pair of eyes. So how long before the broody teen and the good witch get it on? I personally give it all two more episodes, though I doubt that they are headed for more than just a fling.

New Characters:
Elijah (Daniel Gillies) is introduced as one of The Original, a powerful coven of old world vampires that seem to be responsible for the origin of the species. Aside from searching for Elena, Elijah now has an ax to grind against the two vampires that skewered him, Damon and Stefan.

Wouldn't We Love to See?
Say what you want, but Damon's love for Elena runs deeper than Stefan's, and while the series' perennial bad boy doesn't feel he is worthy of Elena's love, isn't this the hook-up we would all love to see?

Whatever they do with this relationship, the one thing they shouldn't do is make Damon pine away for Elena like Spike once did for Buffy (Yes, this is a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer). This time the bad boy should win for once.

Along the same lines, why not let Caroline Forbes hook-up with werewolf boy (aka Tyler)? After all, isn't that the forbidden kind of love that makes this type of show more watchable?
