The Various Types of Holiday Treats You Can Make

Rachel Soden
It's the most wonderful time of the year. Lights are going up. Trees are being chopped down. Plans are being made. Letters to Santa are being sent out. Baked goods are in the oven. One of the best parts of the holiday season is the various candy, cookies and other baked goodies that fill the house up with the most wonderful smells. If you're looking for some ideas on what to make/buy this year, here are some ideas for great holiday foods.

-Fudge. Is there anything in the world better than a big chunk of fudge? Well, maybe two! If you can't make it from scratch, you can purchase a box kit at the grocery store.

-Candy Canes. I can guarantee you won't make it through a Christmas season without seeing at least a dozen candy canes. The old standard peppermint candy cane is no longer alone. You can now purchase candy canes in an assortment of colors, flavors and sizes.

-Divinity is a light, fluffy candy. Made with sugar, water, egg whites and corn syrup this is sure to be a hit at Christmas. You can even add vanilla and nuts. Just make sure to cook it on a dry day. Humidity will stop it from hardening.

-Cookies. Nothing tastes better during the holiday season than some sugar cookies in the shape of Christmas trees, angels, stars, bells and Santa. Let your children sprinkle the sugar on!

-Eggnog. This is such a popular holiday drink that you can now purchase eggnog shakes at McDonalds. Mix it up with or without the alcohol. Your choice.

-Hot Chocolate. While not technically considered a Christmas food, when the weather is cold nothing is better than a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

-Brownies. While not technically considered a Christmas holiday food, everyone loves brownies. They are an all season food.

Candy and treats are synonymous with Christmas. Not only do they make great treats for home, if put together in attractive packaging, they make great, and inexpensive presents. So go ahead and whip up a bunch of candy as presents for you coworkers. I guarantee they will love it. Just be sure to make a little extra. Why? Because you always need extra snacks at Christmas time.

From here I feel the need to add a heartfelt plea to all those thinking about inflicting a fruitcake on a family member, friend or coworker. Please, put down the fruitcake. Don't do it. It's not worth it. Don't be that person. There are very few people who actually like fruitcake.
