Experience the Appetizers
Spanakopita is one of my favorite Vernon Inn appetizers. The flaky phyllo dough is full of spinach and feta making it an amazing taste sensation.
Ordering the Saganaki (also known in our family as the flaming cheese appetizer) is a "must do" experience. Watch your server set it on fire and join them in the celebratory yell, "Opa!"
Authentic Greek Cuisine
You have not had pizza until you have had one of the Vernon Inn's Mediterranean pizzas. Fresh vegetables, on a crispy crust is an enjoyable eating experience. Choose from one of the authentic Greek dishes like moussaka or pastitsio. You can also order the Captain's Dish and enjoy appetizer sized portions of some of the main dishes the Vernon Inn serves.
Fresh salads full of crisp vegetables come with your dinner, and they are best topped with the house creamy feta dressing.
You can enjoy the Vernon Inn if Greek food isn't something you want to try. You can opt from black Angus beef, chicken or salmon dishes.
Save Room for Desert
Give their baklava a try. You will be hooked on this great little Greek dessert. It is sweet, syrupy and makes you feel like you are doing something sinful!
What to Expect
The Vernon Inn has candlelit tables and is a perfect destination for a date. You can opt to sit at the full bar or the tables closer to that area if you are casually dining. Prices do vary. Some dishes are higher priced, but the food is quality and well worth it.
Service is hit or miss. We have been there when the wait-staff is helpful and attentive, and we have been there when we have had to ask several times for refills or remind them several times of an order. Either way the wait-staff is always friendly and courteous and quick to remedy the situation.
Reservations are not needed, but if you are planning on a date, call ahead to make sure your table is saved. Dressy or casual, you can pick your clothes to fit your occasion.
Keep in mind that carry-out is available.
The Vernon Inn Restaurant and Tavern (The Greek Place) is located on 2663 Mount Vernon Rd SE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
