When others wore t-shirts and jeans, he dressed like a clown;
He danced like Fred Astaire, sang with a voice full of soul;
He was the Charley Chaplin of Rock and Roll.
Some of his songs remind me of Elton John;
Like Mr. Bojangles, he sang The Show Must Go On;
Shareham, England, he is from there;
His parents christened him Leo Sayer.
With just a piano and his gravel-pit voice, he begins Giving It All Away;
A mild orchestra has no choice, and joins the melodious fray;
A tide of sounds rise in my ear
As I listen to this soft-rock balladeer.
A vaudevillian romp is One Man Band;
Put on your tap shoes or run in the sand;
A good-time acoustic guitar,
A Benny Goodman clarinet while you're drivin' your car;
Take your cane in your hand
While you dance to the One Man Band.
♫You know I can't dance...You know I can't dance...♫
Fills Long Tall Glasses with a banjo-pickin' trance;
♫Wait a minute! Of course I can dance...I can dance...♫
Leo sings as he pours on the dance floor when given the chance.
Moonlighting. Can a song so badly suck?
When I listen to the Johnny-one-note sounds,
I just wanna run this track over with a truck!
♫Ah...ah hah...♫
You Make Me Feel Like Dancing is a song I like to play;
When I listen to this greatest hit,
I feel like dancing the night away;
Leo's voice does a falsetto here,
Then switches to a full-voice gear.
♫When I Need You, I just close my eyes and I'm with you
And all that I so want to give you...it's only a heartbeat away... ♫
When I close my eyes and listen to this ballad at the end of a stress-filled day,
I float like a cloud while Leo sings aloud, and I listen to a saxophone play.
How Much Love is a robust rock song,
A pumpin' piano jam that can't go wrong;
It reminds me so much of Elton John,
A tempo so fast it's here--then it's gone;
With light, then gritty vocals by Leo Sayer,
It rocks the speakers of my CD player.
An orchestrated ballad is Endless Flight,
Flying out my speakers into an endless night;
Leo's singing here takes wings and shows off his range;
It's a love song he sings and a song about change.
A thunderous rock storm is Thunder In My Heart;
Gravel-pit singing to the end from the start.
A disco beat and a falsetto voice are back-to-back;
When I hear Easy To Love, I skip to the next track.
Leo sings with feeling and his voice is true;
Raining In My Heart is a song you can slow-dance to;
The next track is a ballad that is bittersweet and blue;
The name of the tune is I Can't Stop Loving You.
A steady rock beat, slow but sure;
Leo's voice is soulful and pure;
When this song came to me,
I was Living In A Fantasy;
Words cannot describe this next song:
It's More Than I can Say;
Perhaps it is best to sing it:
♫Whoa whoa yay yay...♫
A full-scale, Richard Perry production
With Leo's voice sailing above;
Another bittersweet ballad
Is Have You Ever Been In Love.
Well, there you have it my good reader--The Very Best Of Leo Sayer;
All you need now is a nostalgic heart and an empty CD player.
Enjoy.
