The Visit to the Great Kempty Falls in Masuri, India

Taru Mehta
The State of Uttar Pradesh in India attracts lots of tourists from India as well as from around the world to view the many beautiful hill stations located in this state. Masuri is one such hill station that has aunique beauty of its own and is still not converted or polluted like many other Indian hill stations. That is why the visit to Masuri is still pleasant and enjoyable for all the tourists. Masuri is full of beautiful site seeing places like water falls, lush green parks, hiking and jogging trails, picnic points and the cable car rides. The Kempty fall is one of the most beautiful spots to be visited at Masuri.

Masuri is situated at the height of around 6600 feet from the mean sea level in the Himalayan Mountains range and is around 162 miles away from the city of Delhi. The hill station of Masuri was invented by one British army officer, named as Captain Anga in the year 1827. The tourists can easily reach Masuri by train up to Dehradun, which is only at around one hour drive away from Masuri. There are direct night buses also plying from Delhi for Masuri on daily basis. I have visited Masuri many times and my favorite hotel at Masuri is Hotel Padhmini Nivas. It is a simple residential type hotel, managed by an aged Gujarati couple. It offers excellent facilities to the tourists. The rooms are very large with all the decent furniture, TV, attached bathroom with large circular water tub, and the full wall to wall carpet. The rates for this hotel are around Rs.3000 ($75) per day for a nice and cozy double room. This hotel is situated slightly away from the main market of Masuri but still can be the most ideal spot for the tourists.

We started from our hotel at around 8 am after breakfast by a hired car. Kempty fall is around 5 miles away from the town center on the Masuri - Chakrata road in the middle of thick forests and small hills. The water falls from the height of around 180 feet height presenting the most scenic view. The water falling on the rocks below presents a lovely view to the tourists. The Kempty fall view becomes really remarkable during the rainy season due to large water flow. The tourists have to get down around 200 feet on a hilly road to reach up to the base of the fall. This hike to the base of the fall is slightly difficult for aged and the weak people. It would be advisable to carry walking stick with you while getting down at this fall as the way is slightly rough and irregular. However, once you reach there, the unlimited fun awaits you. The tourists can take exciting bath below the water fall, if the season permits. The tourists can have a small picnic here at the water fall base under the trees. We had carried picnic lunch with us and our entire family enjoyed half a day picnic in the natural environment of the water fall. The beauty of Kempty fall is different in each season. However, the best time to visit this water fall is during the early winter in the months of October to December. The tourists can easily pass full day here at the water fall by involving in various activities like hiking, small mountains climbing, and relaxing with nature. Some adventure lovers prefer to walk from the city of Masuri to this fall. It may take around an hour and a half to reach this water fall covering the distance of around 5 miles. The tourists must carry the drinking water supply and the light packed lunch with them as there are no good restaurants at the fall.

The weather can be very cold at Masuri during the winter months and all the tourists must carry hot woolen clothes with them. Masuri is known as the queen of hill stations in India and this lovely Kempty Falls fully justifies this name of queen of hill stations. It is my one of the most favorite hill stations in India. I always make sure to visit this hill station at least once during my visit to India every year in the winter.
