Begin with Clean Hair
Hair loaded down with styling products is hard to create volume in, which is what this 70s hair trend is all about. Therefore, begin with freshly shampooed and conditioned hair. Towel dry hair and apply a quarter-sized dollop of mousse into the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together and work the mousse into your damp hair. Comb hair to remove tangles and distribute the mousse throughout. If you have curly hair, scrunch your hair slightly to create volume and allow it to air dry. For wavy-haired ladies, you may need to set your hair.
Straight-Haired Gals, Set Your Hair Overnight To Create Volume
Part your hair in four sections and secure each section with a covered elastic band. Remove the elastic band and braid each section of hair, creating one to four braids per section depending on hair length. Tie a scarf or doo rag around your head making sure your hair is covered and sleep with the braids in overnight.
Creating 70s-Inspired Volume for Your Hair
For those with curly hair, once your hair has dried, take a wide-tooth comb and comb your curls out. Fluff your hair while you comb out your curls to create volume. Use your fingers to help create more volume after you have combed your curls out. If you have Afro hair like mine, use a boar-bristled brush to create frizz, adding more volume to the hair.
If you had to set your hair in braids, take the braids out. Comb the braids using a wide-tooth comb and begin to use the comb to fluff your hair. If you want more fluff at the ends, apply a small amount of mousse to your hands and scrunch the ends of your hair to make them fluffier and create more volume.
Style Options
Pull hair into a ponytail, wear a ponytail up front with the back flowing free or mix a little 1980s in and wear a banana clip. You can also choose the look I went for. I took two different colored scarves, twisted them and tied them around my head making a headband.
The fluffy volume of this 70s-inspired hair trend can be worn during the day or night. Play around with different style options for your new voluminous hair. If you have naturally frizzy hair, you can stop worrying about taming those wild tresses because they are now in style for spring 2011.
