The Voter’s Obbligato

A Privledge, Obligation and Difficult Choice

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

Choosing from a menu

Devoid of edible choices

Having listened to

The hypnotically irritating

Drone

Of words, accusations

And protestations

Devoid of sensible

Communications;

Emotionally dehydrated

By the pervasive hot air

That comes as a loud

And angry gust,

Though the result

May be a bust,

Vote we must.

Arguments

That can never change

A plan or a mind,

Looks and sneers

That are predictably

Un becoming and

Unkind;

The poor voter

Is always hoping to find

Some absolution

Or, at least,

A more acceptable

Solution.

The right choice

Has not been offered

Yet;

The choices available

Are those

That we get.

Civics taught us

That it is both

Privilege and obligation

Required to sustain

The integrity

Of the processes that

Have found our nation;

Why is it, then,

That we feel no

Elation

When we cast our vote

From a leaking boat

Into a rancid moat

Where only something

(Or someone)

Powered by sheer

Effluence

Will float?

With diminished hope

The voter shall grope

As culture slips

On a downhill slope

From what is recalled

As light

Into a bottomless

Fractured and leaking

Grotto.

A voter's

Obbligato.

    Wow! You sure do love poetry, I've dabbled in that but I prefer writing essays. Still another great poem

    It does feel like we are choosing the best of the worst, but at least we have the right to choose. wonderful...as usual.

    And these are just the appetizers...wait until we get to the main course! It is mind-boggling how much money is spent on these campaigns..and how little we really learn about the candidate leadership qualities and values. If you believe the political pundits, the only vote that counts is our dollars given to the campaigns -- by the time of the election, the votes have been bought by clever advertisements. I agree with Orchiolium that we need a real third party at the national level, but if we don't get the money and coprporate influence contained, it won't matter much.
