Some of the car manufacturers who have decided to restrict the import of luxury cars are Toyota, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Honda Motors. Popular imported models like the BMW X6, and 7-series saloon, Mercedes SL Class and SLK class sports cars, Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Mitsubushi Montero and Honda CR-V will come with a minimum waiting period of three months.
Honda has restricted its import of the crossover SUV CR-V. The decision was taken in the backdrop of dropping demand and fluctuation in currency rates of rupees against yen. The company reported no sales in the month of April-June period.
Talking about it to media, the Chief Executive Officer and President of Honda Siel Cars India, Mr Masahiro Takedagawa said "The changes in currency led to an increase of Rs 3 lakh in the price of Honda CR-V. This led to fewer bookings or no booking at all. Hence Honda was forced to chart a new policy on imports."
Toyota Motors too has decided to import cars only against confirmed bookings. The models include the top selling Toyota Camry, Land Crusier Prado and Land Cruiser. The company was to avoid building up of inventory above Rs 40 Lakh - Rs 80 Lakh. "these vehicles are fully imported and involve high amount of import duty, and hence which the company wants to restrict the number of imported vehicles. " said Deputy Managing Director (marketing ) Mr. Sandeep Singh.
The global meltdown has impacted the sale of luxury cars in India. Most of these imported luxury cars comes with a starting price of Rs 25 lakh onwards. The most expensive cars like Bentleys and Rolls Royce come with a minimum waiting period of six months.
The decision has also been taken to help car companies avoid selling the vehicles at a discount rate due to high inventory.
