Upon entering the hotel, we were greeted by a friendly doorman who was quite knowledgeable about the DC surroundings, buses, and was very quick to assist us in flagging down a cab. The check-in process was very easy, however a few of the front desk clerks seemed to be paying more attention to their personal conversations then assisting the customers. We weren't given any directions on how to get to our room (even though the elevators were right there in the lobby) and they didn't explain to us the information necessary to exit the hotel parking lot, which upon leaving at the end of our stay turned into a bit of confusion.
Staying at the Washington Plaza Hotel a week before Christmas made the experience a bit brighter. The lobby held a gorgeous large Christmas tree and four extremely comfortable soft leather couches. Right off to the side of the main lobby is the No. 10 Thomas Restaurant that is a tad expensive, but offers an array of dining options from buffets to salads to seafood. This is the restaurant where you will get your room service from. The Washington Plaza Hotel gives you the option to fill out an in room service card for dining to hang on your door for breakfast room service the next morning. This didn't work out very well for us, as they had forgotten our order even though it was submitted to our door handle well before the cut off time. The No. 10 Thomas Restaurant was very accommodating to their error, as they gave us our order with no charge and even added a few extra morning fruits and yogurt.
Right around the corner from the elevators in the lobby, you will find a small souvenir shop complete with Washington, DC knickknacks, key chains, post cards, t-shirts, pens, and other area specific items along with the usual mixes of drinks and snacks.
The Washington Plaza Hotel does also have a pool with a beautiful small fountain, however due to it being winter, it was closed.
A co-worker and I were in the area three days for business and found that the hotel room was accommodating perfectly for the short stay. The room was small with two extremely comfortable double beds that were a mere two or three feet apart, HD television with about thirty channels, work desk with three outlets, complimentary Wi-Fi, storage safe, and iron. The bath was complete with a separate dressing area complete with a large mirror, sink, plenty of towels, and lots of space. I almost felt like there was more room in the dressing area then there was in the actual sleeping area.
Besides the size of the sleeping area, the color scheme was a dark orange, red, and navy blue, which made it feel really warm and cozy especially during the winter season.
The maid service was very clean, prompt, and consistent in keeping our room clean and filled with the necessary toiletries. The Wi-Fi complimentary service was easily accessible and very fast.
The Washington Plaza Hotel is just around three miles from the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and several must see attractions.
Buses seem to run regularly around the area. At most we had to wait ten minutes for a bus going from the Washington Monument back to the Washington Plaza Hotel. Cabs, however, are a little different. It seemed difficult for us to flag down a cab, even though there were overabundances of them. The doorman at the Washington Plaza Hotel was wonderful in offering to assist with this task.
Room rates range from $80 to $120 per night and the hotel offers single, double, king, and suite room reservations.
I highly recommend spending your short stay in Washington, DC at the Washington Plaza Hotel. It fits the budget for your business and quick sightseeing pleasure trip.
