The Water Horse Legend of the Deep is about the legend of a dragon like creature that lives in a waterway. The film is during wartime when the master of the house is gone to battle and troops have been stationed and need billeting in the main character's home which happens to be a very large home. The central character is a young boy whom misses his father (assumed dead due to war). The young boy finds a large egg that washed up on shore, he takes it and of course it hatches a sea creature.
Many funny antics similar to E.T. happen throughout the story and create an interesting and fantastical story for kids. The Water Horse Legend of the Deep has been compared to E.T. and its brilliance however I assure you it falls far short of being in the same category as E.T.
Near the end, the last half hour of The Water Horse Legend of the Deep is a very violent and loud experience even for adults as explosion after explosion erupts on screen as the soldiers start to pursue The Water Horse. The entire story seems as if the writers came to the end and didn't know what to do with the story so they came up with a lot of noise and action to give us our moneys worth. You could cut out the entire military sub plot and this movie would have been a great retelling of the classic legend.
The Water Horse Legend of the Deep is heavy laden with special effects that work until the last act. It is a good story gone awry. Not worth having your kids sit through.

Great review. I also thought the rating was off for this one. I noticed a couple words I'd rather my kids didn't hear, as well as some things I'd rather they didn't see. They did like the movie, but I have a pet peeve with these "kids" movies lately. The content of them seems to be getting closer to films more appropriate for an adult audience, which I am not happy about at all. Transformers was the worst for me yet - not for kids - even 13 year olds, which it was rated for. More like NC-17.
