The Way Things Used to Be

The Way Things Used To Be

Sometimes, I cry, I don't know why,
I often feel, sometimes not real,
I get so angry, get really, really mad,
You don't understand, that makes me sad,
I'm so very innocent, so young, so small,
Some think too young, too hurt at all;

Sometimes I hurt so deep inside,
I feel it robs me of my pride,
I need attention, I need love,
I need to be special; I need your love,
Please, listen, carefully to what I say,
Help me move past yesterday;

Nightmares haunt my sleep at night,
Too many changes in my young life,
So many changes, it's hard to see
Where I'm going, where should I be?

I left my best friend in Chino,
Moved time after time, again I must go,
To a different school, to a different town,
Maybe, for now, we'll settle down;

Sometimes I cry, sometimes I pray,
My dad's approval, it makes my day,
I shout, I cry, I try to hide
The pain, the hurt, I feel inside,
I want things like they used to be,
When mom and dad both lived with me;

Do you hear me when I say
How much I miss my yesterday?
I need for you to know its best,
To let me get it off my chest;

Little kids hurt deep inside,
Don't understand, that's why we cry,
Our feelings are packed, neat on the shelf,
Like you, we must express ourselves,
Please, listen to us when we say
Help us find a brighter day;

Give us a hug, give us a kiss,
Give us your love, we do insist,
My little brother may cry at night,
My sisters and me, sometimes we fight,
Just doing the things that siblings do,
Little people we are, we are human too;

A brighter tomorrow is coming our way,
The way things were, was yesterday,
But, again, I need to mention
That when we're bad, we want your attention,
Give us a hug, give us a kiss, give it now,
We do insist,
Please, listen to us when we say
Help us make it through the day;

We're hard headed, stubborn, noisy at play,
Just doing things little children way,
Give us love and discipline, guide us too,
For, you must fill the grown up shoe;

Living in this brand new world,
So hard for little boys and girls,
We used to have one family,
But, now we're faced with three:
One with our mom
One with our dad
And one that used to be;

A brighter tomorrow is on the way
Please, listen to us when we say,
Help us move past yesterday.

    Divorce is very hard for all parties involved.. and I believe it is the parents responsibility to make SURE their children know thta it had nothing to do with them and keep as close to normal routines as possible! Very nice poem with sadly too often realities of what a child goes through in result to divorce.

    Excellent! This needs to be given to every family that finds itself separated.

    Very moving and touching - you express yourself, and through the eyes of a child, very well!
