The Weird News Weekly Animal Edition

Bears and Dogs Oh My!

Karen Bishop
It must be something in the air. I found some great animal weirdness this week, and I couldn't choose just one. As a result, I give you the weird news weekly animal edition.

Beary Italian

In New Jersey a man was mugged in his driveway by a most unusual criminal. It wasn't his money that was taken, it was his Italian sandwich!

Henry Rouwendal was packing his car when he was hit from behind by a sandwich mugger, and knocked to the ground. The black bear grabbed the food and ran, but not before Henry got in a few good hits to the bear's snout and throat.

The bear was definitely not a vegetarian and didn't like vegetables. He took the bread, and the mix of meats, but left behind the lettuce, onions and tomatoes. Hope Mr. Bear enjoyed his ill gotten gains. At least he won't have onion breath.

Canine or Bear?

It's a bear with a yen for dog food. This bold bear entered the home of Brenda Freeman through the pet door. Then he snacked on dog food, tore up some herbs she had planted in pots and then left.

The Freeman's dog, who weighs 120 pounds, breed unknown, gave a bark-growl to alert his owners to the intruder. Thankfully the bear was in the mudroom and they were able to shut the door between it and the rest of the house.

The hungry bear ate and tore up the plants all within 10 minutes before exiting the home again. Brenda Freeman described him as a "very graceful, very calm" bear.

I think for safety they need to move the dog's food into the house and keep the door shut from now on.

The Dog Did It

A young man, Jon Meier, 17, from Wisconsin missed out on a class trip to Peru this week. He had been given the okay by officials at the O'Hare airport in Chicago on the condition of his slightly chewed on passport. They told him it was still usable.

In Miami, he presented his passport to board the plane heading for Peru but officials there rejected his chewed on passport. The explantion for the condition of his passport didn't move them. He told them the truth, his one year old dog Sunshine ate it.

He missed out on the trip, but holds no bad feelings toward his beloved puppy. He says quite honestly, "I love her too much."
