Get Your Weird News Chuckle of the Day!

Karen Bishop
It's time for the weird news weekly review. Here are the eye rolling, chuckle worthy weird news pieces for the week of July 20-24.

OOPS!

This may have been the reaction of a few people at a shelter in Spring Hill, Florida this week. Maria Velez's fur baby Buddy was under quarantine for four days after biting a pet sitter. I suppose he just wanted to know what she tasted like. Sheesh people, give the kitty a break!

Maria and her son, age 11, went to pick up their beloved fur baby only to find out he had been euthanized. The mistake was made when a shelter worker made a phone call to a person she thought was Buddy's owner. This person gave permission to euthanize the cat because he/she didn't want the cat anymore. It's a tragic mistake, and my heart goes out to Maria and her family.

Cheap Dentistry

Who needs to pay hundreds of dollars to a dentist when you can stroll on over to your neighbor's garage and have your dental issues taken care of. Rosa Maria Toledo was arrested for allegedly practicing dentistry in her garge turned office. She was a good bookkeeper though, because they found a ledger with hundreds of patient's names in it.

Her garage-office was the envy of dentists everywhere. She had a very nice drill set, a cabinet that had molds, crown glues, dental casings, bridges, and partial dentures in it. For the ultimate in patient comfort, she escorted them to a reclining chair. Maybe more people would go to the dentist if they had recliners in their offices. Police were given information that she had been a dentist in Mexico before moving here. Rosa has been charged with practicing dental hygiene without an active license, and operating dental equipment without a license.

Get Your Shark Here!

I'm renaming Florida, "The Land of the Looney" this week. Just when you think you've heard it all, there's this pleasant little tale.

In downtown Miami, calls were made to the police as two men rode Miami's Metromover downtown train carrying a six foot long nurse shark. Before you get all excited, the shark was not alive. They were going from one fish market to another trying to sell the shark. Their asking price was about $10, but no one was biting.

They eventually realized their bid for quick money wasn't going to happen, and plunked the poor thing in the middle of a residential street. If they can find out who these men are, they could face charges of improper killing and disposal of an animal, and selling a shark without a license.

Fate At Its Finest

Just because we all need an awwww moment, I bring you this heartwarming tail. In Pennsylvania, firefighters responded to a call to rescue two dogs stuck on a cliff. Derrick Bollinger, a volunteer fire chief, was among the handful of men who answered the call.

After one of the firefighters hauled the dogs to safety, they took the lucky dogs to the Action of Animals Humane Society in Derry Township. The director told Derrick she had a Dalmatian she thought would be a perfect mascot for the firehouse. He couldn't believe his eyes when he looked at the dog, and realized it was Halligan, the dog he was forced to give up five years ago when he moved. Derrick and Halligan are reunited, and I send my best wishes that they won't be parted again any time soon.

Good stuff. I guess there will be a lot of people looking for a new place to have their teeth attended to. I hope they won't be too disappointed with their new services.
