The Weirdest Thing I Did to Stop Myself from Eating Sugary Candy

Edmund Brodt
We all love candy. And why not? It tastes good. It helps release certain endorphins into our blood stream. And it also helps us to gain weight and create cavities. Especially so are those sugary candies, the ones like candy corn, Nerds, Pixie Sticks. All of these take a horrible toll on your body, and yet for some of us, they're just completely irresistible.

I'm a weird person. When I eat normal food, I usually consume a moderate amount. But when I'm around candy, it seems like I can't help but to grab a new piece every thirty seconds. Around Halloween and Valentines day, I seem to gain a few pounds consistently.

Well, I've done a lot of stuff to try to stop myself from doing this. First, naturally, I would lock the candy away where I could not access it easily. Well, that works until I decide to get up and grab the whole bag (not having the discipline to only grab a couple pieces). Then I would do things to keep my hands busy, like by using a stress ball. Then I developed this habit of drinking cups upon cups of water. It STILL would not work. I even tried gagging myself, and even making myself gag when I tried to eat too much candy. I have an addictive personality. What can I say?

Well, one unusual method I used was to mix in old, expired, out-of-date candy with the new stuff. This didn't completely stop me, but it made me look a lot closer at the wrapper before I opened it and ate a piece of chocolate or a mouthful of Nerds. This cut my consumption in half, and good thing, too. I'm a few pounds lighter this winter as a result.

Probably the weirdest thing, though, was to let a dog have a lick at it every time I opened a container of candy. Some Black Labradors have extremely energetic personalities, and will put their nose into everything when given the chance. And after a dog has sniffed around and even licked the inside of the candy bag, you generally want to close up shop and get rid of it. So I had my safe amount, and I'm happy for it without all the cavities. Thankfully, the Black Lab has yet to get a hold of enough to have a heart attack, so we're both happy and healthy.
