The Why Not Lounge in Central Florida - Dance and Laugh All Night Long

An Interesting and Enjoyable Lounge for Your Entertainment

Brian Munger
If you live in central Florida and/or are on vacation in this area, and you don't want to spend your night out at touristy Disney or Universal and you don't want to spend your night out in downtown Orlando, then I have a great alternative for you in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

There is a legendary lounge called the "Why Not Lounge," which is always a barrel of fun. This establishment is located in the lounge of a Holiday Inn, conveniently located right off I-4, at 230 West State Road 436, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714.

You will have a hoot of a time there, especially if you go there on a Friday or Saturday night. On these nights, they have a stand-up comedy show starting at 8 PM. Normally, they have three or four comics performing on stage. Usually, the first two comedians are only up on stage for about five to ten minutes, but then are followed by the longer feature and main acts. If you are looking to watch a famous comedian like Dane Cook at this joint, then you will not find him. There are never any huge names performing at this place, but they are not rookies, either. Their names won't sound familiar, but they can still make you laugh like the best of them. Personally, I enjoy watching comedians that I never heard of . . . you never have high expectations from an unknown, so when they do say something funny, it's like an early Christmas present. On occasion, they will have a comedian that is not so funny, but even that can be funny. Sometimes laughing at a comedian bombing is more enjoyable than laughing at a good comedian!

The comedy show usually ends between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM, at which time they will randomly draw several patrons' names from a big jar and award several people with free drinks! Shortly thereafter, they clear away some of the tables and chairs in front of the stage to make room for dancing. From 10 PM to 2 AM, there is live music, DJ music and plenty of dancing and drinking. The music selection often ranges from classic disco songs, to 80's songs, to today's hip hop songs. From time to time, they will even throw in a "slow" song so you non-dancers can get out there without having to look too silly. To be honest, though, you can not look too silly in this place. Unlike some other dance clubs, the patrons at this place usually have NO dancing skills at all! I would say that about 90% of the people that get out and there dance look like fools, so if you can't dance, you should fit right in!

There are several people that just come for the music and dancing, but I recommend getting there early so you can watch the comedians and enjoy the whole package. Plus, if you get there for the comedy show, you will be able to claim a good table before it gets crowded later in the night. Speaking of tables, I recommend sitting on the left side of the stage. If you sit at a table directly in front of the stage, you will ultimately lose your table because they will be removed to make room for the dance floor. You can sit on the right side of the stage, but this side is near the main entrance, so you always have people coming and going behind you, and you can occasionally hear people chatting near the main door during the comedy acts. Plus, this side is near the main bar, which is the most crowded bar in the lounge. If you sit on the left side, you will have easy access to a far less crowded bar on the other side of the room, which will make for a shorter wait time when you need to get another drink. In addition, you will be closer to the outdoor patio, which will be convenient if you are a smoker or simply need to sneak out real quick for some fresh air.

The cover charge for the comedy show is around $10 and the beers are around $4 apiece. And if you drink too many beers, then hey, you are in a hotel! Go get a room to pass out in! How convenient!

The lounge does have a dress code, which calls for no baseball caps and no flip flops. Other than that, you can dress pretty casual, although, there are a handful of people that get pretty decked out for this place.

So, if you are looking for some good laughs and fun music, and are looking to dance at a place where nobody will look at you funny, then I highly recommend the Why Not Lounge! Everybody has to go there at least once!
