The Widow's Song

L. Lee Scott
Grief
Lies like a heavy blanket
Woven from pain,
Smothering the sleeper.

Wan sunlight
Bleaching out colors
Leaving in its wake
A faded sepia world.

Every gift
Comes with needling loss,
Every joy
Delineated by sorrow.

Each day like the last,
Like the next
A painful awakening
To a world unchanged.

You described it so well, even though I wasn't a widow I was divorced and they feel the same, well divorce I have heard from someone who suffered both was actually worse. there is a certain dignity with death, and a sense of failure and seeing the other one going on living without you is a particular kind of hell. great poem

Excellent poem. I was once asked by a woman in a Bed, Bath and Beyond if I wake up with a smile. Yeah right!
