'The Wolverine' Casting Calls Go Out as Tokyo Filming Location in Limbo

Important Update 3-17-2011: Today on March 17, 2011 Darren Aronofsky has announced that he will not be directing "The Wolverine". He sites the length of time that he would have to spend away from his children and family as the reason for his decision. However the real reason for his departure from the project may be understandably due to the catastrophic events that have recently taken place in Japan - more specifically the radiation concerns in Tokyo, where filming has long been scheduled to take place after the New York scenes were shot. Filming in New York was to begin in mid-July, 2011. It is unknown how Aronofsky's departure will effect the casting schedule and filming start dates, as well as shooting location changes.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Marvel Enterprises are moving forward with initial casting calls for the Hugh Jackman feature film "The Wolverine" being issued this past week on Friday March 11, 2011. These are for the film's lead and supporting roles. The filming locations are set for New York first, then in Tokyo, although there has been no statement from the studios whether or not the Tokyo location will be changed due to the recent catastrophic events in Japan.

"The Wolverine" will be based around Logan's exploits in Japan and will be modeled after Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's 1982 limited series on the character. It is not going to be a sequel, but rather a separate story from "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".

Academy Award nominated "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky will direct "The Wolverine" from a screen play by Academy Award winning writer Christopher McQuarrie. Lauren Shuler Donner will produce under the banner of her production company The Donner's Company, and John Palermo's Palermo Productions will co-produce.

  • Casting calls issued for "The Wolverine" being issued this past week on Friday March 11, 2011.
  • "The Wolverine" will be based around Logan's exploits in Japan and will not be a sequel.
  • Academy Award nominated "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky will direct "Wolverine".
If the situation improves to a safe level by the time Tokyo shooting is to begin, "The Wolverine" could bring much needed financial help to the city, the same way as big film production has helped New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina.
