The Wonderful World of Knitting

Keith Dailey
When a newborn baby is about to enter the world, knitting small sweaters always comes to mind to most pregnant mothers. It is believed that knitting sweaters or scarves all on your own for loved ones shows the care and love that you feel towards them.

Back in the day, it was compulsory for young ladies to know how to knit. Nowadays, however, with the invention of knitting machines, it has become more of a recreation than a chore.

Knitting is the process in which yarn or thread is weaved to make cloth. Thread loops hold each other together (also called stitches). These stitches are pulled through each other with stitching needles holding the active loops and a new loop is pulled through each one.

Before knitting machines came into play, it had its roots in Ancient Egypt. While excavating Egypt, a gorgeous knitted cotton sock was discovered dating way back to the later half of the first millennium AD. Commercially, its roots began in Paris in 1527, when the very first knitting trade guild came to life.

Right after knitting machines were invented, hand knitting was immediately forgotten. But with the turn of the 21st century, the art of knitting has once again become all the rage.

Two knitting needles are used to knit woolen threads into cloth, which are available in various styles from glass to bamboo. The kinds of needles used determine the distance between stitches. By using different kinds of needles, knitters can produce different kinds of variations for their finished products.

Both needles and yarn come in different sizes and types. The two types of yarn are S-twisted and Z-twisted. Though a lot of knitters only use yarn of one color, a lot of variations may include a variety of colors. In order to make a knitted product more durable, a singular thread of synthetic yarn should be used with pure wool. This also produces a low maintenance product rather than one of pure wool.

Various decorations can be added to a completed product, in order to improve the look and wear of the fabric. This can be done once the knitter is properly acquainted with the various stitches, such as garter stockinet, and purl. Sequins, beads, and bobbles are all great things to compliment knitted products. Applique work and embroideries give them a more professional touch. (Swiss darning is the term for embroidery that looks like knitting.) Colored flowers, leaves, and beans, are other decorations to beautify a finished knitting product. These things can be knitted onto the product with the use of applique work.

Knitting professionals can do wonders with various textures, yarns, stitches, and decorations, once the basics are well out of the way. Knitting is all about creativity and imagination. Once the basics are done with, these factors will guide your path through the wonderful world of knitting. Novices should keep a wide imagination, in order to absorb all the beauty of this world.
