The Wondrous Cross on Ground Zero

World Trade Center's Memorial Site

The events of 911 changed the entire world and there is no mistaking the impact on our lives. It would appear that the recent controversy over two steel beams that formed a Cross at Ground Zero is grounds for a lawsuit. The American Atheists have filed a lawsuit stating that the sight of the cross at Ground Zero is making them sick.

I recently had the opportunity to read an article written by Rabbi David Wolpe who is the Rabbi of the Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. The article appeared in the Washington Post just recently. You can read it here.

Rabbi Wolpe's eloquent article speaks for itself and I have corresponded with him and have received his permission to quote parts of the article for my readership. He writes in part, "The desire to have a cross is about anguish and hope, not imperialism." The Rabbi goes on to state, "The nuisance suits -- deserve dismissal." I encourage you to read the article in its entirety for yourselves.

I believe that if Rabbi Wolpe, who was named the "#1 Pulpit Rabbi in America" by Newsweek magazine and a leader in the Conservative Jewish movement, is in agreement that Ground Zero is a graveyard and the Cross represents both "anguish and hope" for so many in this country and he is standing in support of the Cross, then we should dismiss this lawsuit.

The Rabbi is correct in saying that Ground Zero is a graveyard. There are thousands who lost their lives on 911 and that ground is the only gravesite for too many families. In a recent Yahoo News article by Sheryl Young, she stated the statistics of a Rasmussen Report that showed 72% of Americans favor the inclusion of the Cross at Ground Zero. You can read the Yahoo News article here.

There will always be opposition when a religious marker is placed in a public place, but majority should rule. As Samuel Adams once said, "It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds."

I think the Atheists are just setting brush fires.

Anything the Cross is associated with typically reminds Saints of the blood bought Victory! So I join the chorus let it remain so.

Once again, this country was founded by religious people and the only reason the atheists have any voice at all in this country is because of our tolerance of everyone. If they don't like it( religion, religious symbols, etc), they need to get out!
