The annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, North Carolina is fast approaching the High Country. The event this year is planned for the weekend of October 20th - 21st in downtown Banner Elk. The event is a major one for the High Country area. It brings in numerous tourists, and brings out locals to enjoy the fall weather that the area is known for.
Every year the Woolly Worm festival brings crowds of 20,000+ to enjoy all types of events and booths. These events and booths include the Woolly Worm race, local crafts, food, music. The Mountain Times is reporting the semi-formal Woolly Worm Festival Ball is returning this year after a 9 year absence from the festival. Keep in mind that only the first 150 people that show up for the ball are admitted and the admission price this year is $60 per ticket.
The Woolly Worm Festival is also still looking for volunteers to help with the festivities. The Mountain Times quotes Susan Zalewski from the Avery Country/Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce as saying "In terms of volunteers, we need people to help line the fields, paint the stages and greet our out-of-town guests. We need around 200 volunteers in total. As for vendors, we have specific needs in the areas of pottery, art, metal, sculptures and photography."
With this years events marking the 30th Anniversary of the event it indeed promises to be a wonderful, fun event. Also keep in mind the Woolly Worm Festival helps the local area with many needs. The Mountain Times quotes Susan Zalewski as saying "It's just such a great way for someone to give back to the community when they choose to volunteer. You help the chamber keep our office open, and you help the great children's services work that the Kiwanis performs. On top of that, you have so much fun."
The above mentioned quote is followed up with the Mountain Times quoting Brian Powers the director of the Chamber of Commerce as saying "An event like this one doesn't happen without all the work behind the scenes. You mingle, have fun, and take satisfaction in knowing you are helping the community. In addition, I have never run into a volunteer who said anything other than they had a lot of fun helping out."
Take the advice of the Mountain Times, Susan Zalewski and Brian Powers and help out the local community, plan a family trip to the High Country of North Carolina to enjoy one of the best festivals you could ever imagine. Come for a fun filled family day!
If you would like to volunteer to help in the festivities contact the Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce at (828) 898-5605 or visit their website at averycounty.com.
