The World Islands in Dubai

Shelly Barclay
In this day and age of innovation and technological advances, real estate developers are having to become more and more creative to get ahead of the competition. Nakheel Properties in Dubai is no exception. They are the masterminds behind such creations as Palm Island and Nakheel Tower. And now they have outdone themselves with their creation, the World Islands. The World Islands, off of the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, are a group of 300 man-made islands that are in the shape of a map of the world.

The World Islands were constructed by displacing sand off of the sea floor and developing it into islands in the form of a map of the globe. Each continent on Earth is represented in this creation. The entire archipelago covers an area that is 5.4 miles long and 3.6 miles wide. The islands range in size from 250 thousand to 900 thousand square feet. The World Islands are surrounded by a stone oval that acts as a breakwater. The breakwater has five gaps where boats to and from the mainland can pass through.

The plan for World Islands is to have four categories of real estate development available to residents and visitors. There will be private homes, estates, resorts and communities on the archipelago. Nakheel Properties is selling each of the World Islands to private and commercial builders, so if you've got a few million in the bank you may be able to make one of these islands your home. Construction on many of the islands is currently underway or completed.

The World Islands were completed in January of 2008. Developers then got to work on building the archipelago's infrastructure, i.e., power supplies, plumbing and marinas. Private and commercial owners then got to work on their projects and now the World Islands are really developing. Some of them are very private, while others will boast bustling communities.

The World Islands are now an exclusive paradise. Lush greenery and palm trees dot the landscape and you can't get anywhere on the World Islands without encountering a sandy beach. And if you get tired of the islands, it is a boat ride of mere minutes to get to the mainland. The World Islands have set a new standard for unique real estate development. Thanks to Nakheel properties, Dubai is home to some of the most amazing architecture and real estate in the world.
