The World's Greatest Homemade Doughnuts

Sandra Hatfield
Preparation/Frying Time: approximately 1 to 2 hour

Ingredients:

2 whole eggs
1-cup sugar
2 tablespoons soft shortening
¾-cup milk
3 ½ cups flour
2-teaspoon baking powder
1-teaspoon of baking soda
½-teaspoon of salt
¼-teaspoon nutmeg
¼-teaspoon of cinnamon

How to make the Doughnuts:

Step 1: Get deep fryer ready. Heat up oil to about 370 to 380 degrees.

Step 2: In a bowl beat the eggs thoroughly.

Step 3: Beat in the sugar and the soft shortening.

Step 4: Stir in the milk.

Step 5: Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

Step 6: Put a conservative amount of flour onto the counter.

Step 7: Turn the dough onto the counter with the flour.

Step 8: Knead about five to six times.

Step 9: Roll it out to about a 1/3 inch thickness.

Step 10: Let the rolled out dough rest for about twenty minutes.

Step 11: Cut the doughnuts with a cutter. You can use a large cup and then use something smaller to cut out the
doughnut hole. Do not through away the doughnut wholes. They two can be placed into the fryer.

Step 12: Fry them in hot oil until they become brown.

Step 13: Place the browned doughnuts out and place on a plate covered with paper towels to allow the access oil to drain.

Step 14: When cool enough to touch place the doughnut and doughnut wholes in powdered doughnuts, cinnamon sugar, sugar, or any other coating you may like. You can also leave them plain.

Step 15: Enjoy!

They are I love them. I remember growing up and my mother would bake with me. I came up with this recipe and she let me try it out. Well she did the deep fryer at first. I was kind of afraid of it. But I managed to get over the fear and wow I love making them and am glad I can share them.
