The World's Medical Dilemma - Misdiagnosis

An Examination of Major Problems in Health Care

Misdiagnosis leads to improper medical treatment for many patients around the country. Some physicians diagnose the wrong medical condition for their patients. The conditions can include diseases and infections. As a result, the patient is treated for that specific condition instead of their real health problem. This can cause a lot of confusion down the road. If the treatment is ongoing, patients can develop more health problems due to misdiagnosis.

In time, certain health conditions that were not properly treated due to misdiagnosis may worsen. There is an increased possibility for future medical complications in these circumstances. A patient who has developed a rare skin infection may develop serious problems if he or she is not treated properly. Some of these instances can become fatal. It is not safe for patients to take improper medicine for conditions that they do not have.

There are numerous health conditions that are rare but can cause harmful effects when developed in humans. Many times, doctors will make a diagnosis based on simple factors and previously acquired symptoms. Their diagnosis can also be based on their level of knowledge regarding certain medical conditions. This can have a negative impact on the treatment of some patients. Something that appears to be a minimal infection can turn out to be totally different.

However, the patients themselves are not aware of this. It is why citizens visit doctors in the first place. They trust that their physician has enough skill and knowledge to locate their health problem and take the necessary steps to fix it. Unfortunately, many doctors are not familiar with every health condition that exists. It may not be possible to know how to treat every infection and disease under the sun.

This is due to the fact that some conditions are rare and less likely to occur in patients. At the same time, it is important for doctors to perform many tests and consider every possibility before making a diagnosis. Some medical conditions have similar symptoms. Doctors and health officials should perform more extensive research on medical conditions. It will help physicians to distinguish one medical condition from another.

When this is done, it decreased the chances for giving the wrong diagnosis to a patient. Misdiagnosis can cause major problems for patients both mentally, physically and emotionally. Second opinions can become expensive for uninsured citizens. Many times, patients are unaware that they have been misdiagnosed with a certain infection or medical condition. They find out when their condition has worsened.

Patients also tend to find out during other health related examinations. It is tough for someone to believe that they have one condition yet, they do not. There is also stress that develops when one finds out that he or she has been taking improper medication over a long period of time. This causes an increased number of tests, visits to the hospital and medical bills. Many citizens can not bear to endure these outcomes. It is important that health associations and physicians take extra steps to prevent misdiagnosis.
