Described in the Guinness Book of World Record's as the oldest light bulb in the world, this bulb just celebrated its 110th birthday on June 18,2011. The Livermore, Ca. Station 6 firehouse is home to this record setting light bulb.
The 60 watt light bulb that just won't quit was installed in 1901 and has burned continuously, except for a few blackouts and some outlet moves, at it's home home in the Livermore Ca., fire station. It's used as a nightlight over the firetrucks and is never turned off.
Since the light bulb was first turned on, the stock market crashed and was reborn, there were 2 world wars fought, cars and planes were developed, computers and the Internet were born, and the list goes on and on, just as the bulbs glow goes on and on.
"How the 60 watt bulb keeps burning is a total mystery" states the manager of the Centennial bulb committee. "It's only turned on for about 4 watts but nobody as yet to figure out why it keeps burning," she said. "Scientists from all over the country have looked at this bulb", she states, " but it's longevity is still yet to be determined".
The "Shelby bulb" was donated to the Livermore Volunteer Fire Department and is a somewhat different style bulb. It has a coiled filament and funky design that is said to burn brighter and last longer then the Edison light bulb. I guess nobody would dare dispute that fact .
The bulb's website features a "bulbcam", where you can actually watch it glowing. It's probably the only light bulb in the world with it's own website and is definitely worth checking out, I found. It doesn't have a real bright glow, but it has a consistent glow. It may not be the "brightest" bulb in the world, but it's probably the most famous.
In addition to the Guinness World Record it holds, it has received a number of other prestigious awards including the President George W Bush Award and Senator Barbara Boxer Award, pretty impressive for a little 60 watt light bulb, I must say.
