The World's Proudest Parent

Our son struggled with school for his entire time in our local school district. He was diagnosed with a learning disability and placed on what they call an Independent Educational Plan at our local school when he was in the third grade.

He struggled through school and special classes and many embarrassing moments with his co-students. When my son "Scott" was a junior in high school he was not able to cope with all the issues that came with his education in public schools and I must confess his father and I had no idea what to do for this young man. He was clearly failing school and we had spent literally thousands of hours with teachers and counselors trying to get classes and educational tools for him to succeed.

One evening over dinner Scott stated, "I have found the perfect school for me." Interestingly I wanted to hear what he had to say so ask him for clear details. Scott explained to us that alternative schools were available for school students who were having difficulty with classes and education. I immediately assumed that these schools were for the "Bad Student" you know the kind always in trouble and breaking the rules. This kind of student was not our son he was a very mature young man who clearly knew the difference between right and wrong.

He assured us that this school he was talking about had a curriculum that he thought would better fit his needs. He had even arranged an appointment for us with the Principal of the school. The Principal expressed the desire for them to help our son complete his education at his own pace and in his own way. Once in this alternative school Scott excelled and actually graduated at the same time as his regular high school class graduated and not to brag but Scott graduated as a 4.0 average Honor student. The night of his graduation was one that will remain at the top of my list of Mothers and Fathers proudest moments in the life of their child.

You should be proud! How great is it that you raised a son who is responsible enough to seek out his own education options and find what works best for him.
