Super Urkel
Hoping to ride the wave of the success of Blankman, the execs at ABC had a brainstorm. They would create a spin-off where Family Matters Urkel character would develop superhero powers in his own series. But Jaleel White, the actor that plays Steve refused to do his own stunts and the writers turned to the thought of Gary Coleman filling the role, but he was too short. So the idea was scrapped.
Supermarket Dating
NBC thought it would be great if they combined a reality TV dating show with one of the oldest dating myths in America. The censors killed the concept after one of the participants made suggestive comments to his date while holding up various pieces of eggplant and zucchini. FOX immediately bought the rights to the idea.
Show Me The Salami
The Food Network wanted a catchy name for their new show about meat and its history. The writers got an epiphany, added two British women and had them talk about other foods besides salami. A cable hit was born!
Win Lose or Die!
CBS had an idea for the extreme of extreme game show series, amybe a bit too extreme. Three people picked one of three cards, a win card, a lose card, or a die card. The winner got 1 million dollars, the loser went to a maximum security prison for a year and the die card, well you'd die, but you had a year before you were killed. Then the series would follow the three through their life for the twelve months so see how it changed them. But Dr. Kovorkian was not available so the show never made it past the development stage. FOX also bought the rights to this one.
That's Not Incredible
ABC wanted to revive one of its past hits and provide a fresh modern twist. So they thought of going with the opposite of incredible human feats and endeavors. For the pilot, they interviewed a man who hasn't missed a day of work in over 12 years, and a woman who has never gotten a speeding ticket. Test audiences were too sleepy to give their input and the concept was shelved.
Limo Man
The story of Jack Johnson, limo driver, and private eye. He drives the rich around in the day and evening and fights crime in the night. ABC thought they had a goldmine on their hands, but when CBS came out with Hack, they realized what a stupid idea it was in the first place.
Dogs do the Wackiest Things!
This Animal Planet pilot died because test audiences wanted to see funny cat clips too.

Post a CommentThis is a great article! I hadn't heard of most of these T.V. shows. (maybe because I'm so busy writing for AC, I don't have time for T.V.) I feel better informed now! Thanks for the contribution. :-)
Show me the salami? You have got to be kidding? LOL! This article was funny. You gave a great list. I am glad that I have never heard of any of these shows. Whew.
LOL I haven't seen any of those but I'm more of a history channel girl myself.
thanks for the comments! It's much appreciated. Yah these ideas are horrible hehe but I bet one or two of them could be successfully pitched to some tv exec. Parody is a lot of fun to write. Esther I remember your joke article, lots of very good tips. :)
