The Wrong Engagement Ring

What to Do when You Get the "wrong" Ring

Donna Noble
You have spent months looking at engagement rings on the internet trying to decide what would be the best fit for you. You have it narrowed down to a few that would be acceptable, in fact you love them and would be happy with any of them. The day arrives, your boyfriend proposes and pops open the little square box. Of course you say yes and put the ring on your finger. Only then do you realize that the ring in the box is nothing like the ones you lusted for. So what do you do now?

The socially acceptable thing to do is grin and wear it. Chances are your man has spent hours trying to find something that suits you. He probably asked your friends for advice on finding a ring and he probably drove the jewelers crazy looking at all the different rings. Do you really want to tell him that the ring he chose is all wrong? Is that something you can live with?

If you absolutely cannot live with the ring that was chosen for you most stores will allow you to return an engagement ring. However, there is a usually a limited time frame in which this can be done. Most jewelers require that the ring be in like new condition. If the ring is not in perfect condition the jeweler may refuse to accept it for a return.

The best bet is to try to avoid this situation. If you feel like the proposal is getting close sit down with your boyfriend and let him know what you like. Or better yet send links of your favorite styles of rings to your closest friends. You might want to even stop into a jewelry store with your boyfriend and get some ideas together. If he has a few choices then you will still be surprised by his final decision and he will pick out something you will be sure to like.

If you do get a ring that you don't like remember that a lot of time and thought went into picking it out. Your best bet may be to keep the ring you were given and upgrade to something you like in a few years, maybe as an anniversary present. Some jewelers have an upgrade policy when you can trade your existing ring up for a bigger better model.
