The Year of Festivals

David Alan Lucas
In 1920 six writers formed what would be one of the oldest writing organizations in the United States. Ninety years later, Saint Louis Writers Guild's membership has grown in to the hundreds, including internationally published authors to new authors just learning their trade and wanting to network. To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Saint Louis Writers Guild is hosting a year of writing festivals.

Writers in the Garden

June 5th, 2010, St. Louis Writers Guild will host a special writing workshop and event at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. The workshop, given by St. Louis poet and publisher Dwight Bitikofer will focus on writing about and among nature. After the workshop, the attendees will be encouraged to write in the botanical gardens and return to share their work. The event is free to the public.

Writers under the Sun

July 10th, 2010, St. Louis Writers Guild hold a live writer's contest. The contest, or throw down, will be for poetry and flash fiction. The contest will be judged by local poet and Washington University of St. Louis faculty member. There will be an entry fee per poem and flash fiction piece. The event is open to the public.

Writers in the Park

August 28, 2010, Kirkwood Park will be the center of a large one day writers conference hosting workshops through out the day on many genres and a special workshop for children who want to be writers. The festival will also have editors and agents interested in new writers. There will also be a booth selling St. Louis Writers Guild member's books. The event is open to the public.
