The Yellowjacket Restaurant, McCaysville, Georgia

Abby Greenhill

While visiting McCaysville , Georgia , my husband and I decided to try a restaurant that we had not been to on previous trips to the area, the Yellowjacket Restaurant. Since I couldn't find a website for them, I called to ask what type of food they served. The man that answered the phone told me about their daily specials, which weren't really of interest to me. I asked it they had other items on the menu. He said they have steak, chicken, seafood and other items and they have a salad bar. Those were the magic words; we love a good salad bar.

So off we went in the pouring rain. From the outside the Yellowjacket Restaurant is very plain looking and we really were not sure what we would find inside. One might actually ride by it without realizing that it is a restaurant. What a pleasant surprise when we entered a rather large dining room with lots of tables set and ready for customers. A friendly voice told us to sit wherever we wanted to.

Our waitress, Darlene, was very helpful. She was more than a waitress; she was the greeter, the order taker, the food delivery person and the money taker! We ordered our drinks, and checked out the menu. The drinks arrived quickly, but my sweet tea lacked flavor, which was disappointing.

The Yellowjacket has daily specials such as meatloaf and other '˜comfort' food, along with certain side dishes. They full menu is quite impressive for a small, local restaurant. According to what we heard, it's a place the locals frequent and they are '˜famous' for their fried chicken.

After studying the menu, my husband ordered the fried seafood combo, consisting of oysters, shrimp, scallops, fish and deviled crab. He chose French fries, but then again he always does!

I chose the rib eye steak with a baked potato. If you order a dinner, you also get the unlimited salad bar. Again, quite an impressive salad bar. The ingredients were fresh looking and fresh tasting and there was something there for everyone. They also had a large pot of vegetable soup and an assortment of crackers. There were sufficient dishes and bowls for the help-yourself items.

Their prices are very reasonable and the quality was very good. I ordered my steak medium, but it was well done, which happens frequently when a steak is on the thin side. At $9.99 for the rib eye and $12.99 for the seafood platter, including unlimited salad bar trips, it was well worth the visit.

Appetizers are less than $6.00. The salad bar alone is $6.50. Chicken items range from $9.50 to $9.95, steaks run from $11.95 to $16.95, seafood will cost anywhere from $9.95 to $14.95 and $9.95 for pork chops or ham steak. They have sandwiches for less than $5.00, while dessert will cost you $2.25. They have a rather large selection of dessert items, but we had to take a rain check on that as we were full.

The Yellowjacket Restaurant is located at 2755 Blue Ridge Drive , McCaysville , GA , phone: 706-492-3475. Their menu states, "A North Georgia tradition since 1960" and it is owned by the Goss family. Stop by for lunch or dinner, it's a good thing!

The Yellowjacket Restaurant does not have a website, but don't let that stop you from visiting, you can take my recommendation instead!

Mmmmmm! This sounds like my kind of place! BTW, I will be disappearing from AC/Yahoo! for a while so that I can "hone my craft" of humor and fiction writing. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, but just in case you are wondering what happened to me, that's it.

I've seen a few yellowjackets around here, but not the one you're talking about.

I assume the Yellowjacket name is for the mascot of Georgia Tech, not the wasp itself! SOunds like good home cooking!
