NYRB is one of my favorite periodicals. I really like to read, but no one has time to read all the good books. New York Review of Books publishes thorough book reviews. Sometimes, I go on to buy the book; sometimes, I don't. But it's always a good source of information.
New York Review of Books also publishes essays on a variety of topics - these are written from a liberal perspective (and that's my perspective) and are always written by leading experts. Often, these essays also cover a number of books.
Why do I like NYRB so much? Let's look at the recent print edition:
This issue of New York Review of Books has 19 articles. Here are some of the ones I really liked:
Robert Harrison on two new biographies of Teddy Roosevelt, both concentrating on his environmentalism.
Nicholas Pelham and Max Rodenbeck on three books about Hamas
An anonymous essay on Iran, by an Iranian expert (this is the first anonymous essay I recall in NYRB)
James Bamford, on The Secret Sentry: The Untold story of the National Security Agency, by Matthew Aid
and
Jerome Groupman, on two books about medical diagnosis and how it can go wrong.
------------
But New York Review of Books also publishes reviews about dance, visual art, and many other fields.
I even like a lot of the ads! As you can imagine, most of these are from publishers, and they often highlight books that look really interesting.
I'm going to be a subscriber for a long time.
