The New York Yankees Will Be Busy with Free Agents

Richard McDuff
The NY Yankees have deep pockets, and many holes to fill. With the Yankees needing to fill the new Yankee Stadium, they have to put a winning product on the field. A premium will be paid for quality players in the Free Agent market, to put a winning team on the field. The Yankees failed for the first time this year to make the ACLS playoffs, after 13 consecutive appearances.

Brian Cashman will probably offer CC Sabathia a contract that will eclipse Johan Santana's 137 million of last year. According to the Albany Times Union, a Yankee official claims that the Yankees will also make offers to AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe.

These are all starting pitchers. This is where the Yankees are desperately wanting. The only true starter that the Yankees have is Chien-Ming Wang. Mike Mussina is looking at retiring this year, and he is also a free agent.

Of the three pitchers on the Free Agent market, CC Sabathia is the best, between Cleveland and Milwaukee, he had a 17-10 W/L record and 251 Ks. AJ Burnett at 31 years of age is a close second with a 18-10 record and 231 K in the Toronto Blue Jays hitters park. Derek Lowe is 35 and has averaged 14 wins a year in a pitcher's park with the Los Angeles Dodger. . He could easily be the Yankees fourth starter.

While the Yankee pitching staff needs to be addressed, it will be interesting to see if New York Yankees will have the funds to go after Teixeira and/or Ramirez. Both of these hitters are name players, that will bring fans out to Yankee Stadium.

The Angels have a keen interest in the 28 year old Mark Teixeira, but can they come up with speculated $20 million a year over 8 years that will be needed to sign Teixeira. The Yankees might, if they don't sign all the pitchers that are needed. Swisher can be moved from 1st Base to the outfield for Teixeira. Or Swisher can even be used as a DH.

Ok, there is the 35 year old Manny Ramirez. I would be surprised if they picked him up. His contract demands are so high, I am not sure that even the Yankees will want to pay him. While Ramirez played well for the Dodgers, he was also in the final years of a contract, and we all know how people play in the final year of their contracts.

The Yankees will be going so deep into their pockets this year because they have a new 1.3 billion dollar stadium to fill, and they also missed the MLB playoffs for the first time in 14 years. They can not afford to lose this year.
