The Young and the Restless Diaries

Give Me a Good Cougar Storyline

Lisa Thibault Pietsch
I'll be the first to follow a good cougar storyline but I have doubts about this Nikki and Deacon affair the writers at The Young and the Restless are trying to get us to fall for. (Don't be fooled by soap aging, Nikki is old enough to be Deacon's mother.) Nikki has tried to get involved with other men before and they have always been working some kind of angle to manipulate her. Sadly, Nikki has come to what we can only assume is her late 50's and finds herself still totally clueless as to how to handle a boy toy properly. What really peeves me is Deacon will play her, she'll end up hurting Murphy & Katherine in the process and then, lopsided with guilt and remorse, she'll fall off the wagon again to be ultimately rescued and then abused by Victor. It is her pattern and for all her "working the steps" of the AA program, she still doesn't get it.

I've known Deacon since the character was created back on The Young and The Restless' sister show, The Bold and The Beautiful. He's never been a good guy. He's a two-bit con man.

First he used his son to manipulate the Forresters and try to get Rick Forrester's wife, Amber, for himself.

When that plan didn't work, he developed a grudge against Eric Forrester and chose to charm, marry and deflower Eric's daughter Bridget. To rub salt in the wound, Deacon kept Eric on the phone for a listen while the deflowering happened.

Then Deacon had an affair with Bridget's mother, Brooke, while he was still married to Bridget. This isn't shocking if you watch The Bold and the Beautiful because you know that Brooke Logan Forrester Forrester Forrester et al has slept with every man in her family tree except her father and sons. The Deacon/ Brooke pairing yielded one child (because Brooke always gets pregnant). Deacon gave up his parental rights to his daughter, Hope, but took his son, "Little D" with him when he left town.

Then there was Victoria's indiscretion when she was jealous of JT's friendship with an ex. She hooked up with Deacon at the Athletic Club and then watched her world implode as JT divorced her, took custody of their son, married Mac and moved away.

Such is the joy that Deacon Sharpe brings to women's lives.

It seems he and Nikki were fated for their collision course.

Now, if I were writing the show, I'd wisen Nikki up a little and have her play Deacon like the boy toy he was meant to be.

What do you think?

Is it time for Deacon to get played?

Is it time for Nikki to stop being a sucker for young lovers?

How would you play this story out?

I agree, Rebecca. If Nikki could manage to not get duped by Deacon, I'd say go for it. I think he has actually developed real feelings for her.

What a bad man Deacon is! But why shouldn't Nicki have fun while it lasts, she sure has been dumped by Victor enough!
