Theater District Sundays in New York

While Sundays are for some people still a working day, my wife and I have always tried to be careful to observe the Sabbath. We live in midtown and have three things we like to do, generally, on Sundays in and around our neighborhood.

Exercise: While the day doesn't' have to begin at sunrise on Sundays, we do generally like to wake up early. We like to wake up early because our building is a bustling 24/7 type place at the Jersey bound mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel. While no one is rushing from Manhattan to New Jersey on Sunday mornings as a rule, there are obvious rule breakers as the day wears on. We like to combat this with a particular bit of exercise we reserve for Sunday mornings. We jog out to the West Side Highway and down into Chelsea before heading home to wash up and begin our day.

Dine: Once we've burned some calories for the day, we like to make it out to add some of those calories back on by dining on a fine brunch at the bar Irish Rogue. Rogue has a great brunch menu which is a flat rate for food and two cocktails from their list of drinks. My wife generally gets the eggs Benedict while I opt for a variety of things be it the eggs Florentine, corned beef hash, or the three egg omlette. Of course sometimes we hang around and really get the day going with some more drinks and lazy conversation with many of the Rogue's regular barflies. Having a couple extra drinks then makes our next task that much easier.

2nd Act Matinees: I don't need to tell you that the Broadway stage is hurting; go out and support a Broadway show. I worked on the house staff for Broadway shows for years; I still am lucky enough to know many of the house staff at different theatres. When we want to see a show but don't have the money, we can just Second Act something. It's not even as though I invented this escapade and there are conditions. We generally have to see shows that are older stock and not sold out on Sundays. But still going into a show mid-frame and getting to watch some of that old Broadway magic is made that much easier by befriending the doorman and finding out the skinny on the day's attendance. If you want to be really industrious and there's a show you want to second act where you don't know anyone, you can pose as a customer and just ask the box office before the show, "How's the attendance today?" Saying that you're some kind of an ambient show-go-er and you want to have an "authentic" Broadway experience will help your information gathering and enable you to be brave and go.

That's it! Three things to do in the Hell's Kitchen/Theatre District of Manhattan. Go out, get fit, get fat, and get happy on the Rialto. But dress nice, please. It's Broadway.
